To me this isn't a matured Darkest Hour; I think this is the band going in a lazier, more palatable direction.

This is my favorite album of theirs. I like the production. I like the cleans. And I like the accessibility of the all around sound.

the cleans are so fucking unnecessary a majority of the time. I LOVE John Henry's cleans, but on this record they're just not needed. This album without the clean vocals would easily be a 4.

Can't really blame them for going for making a more palatable album. It was probably that or they were going to fall into a place where they were even less relevant than before. Though they may have written "better" albums in the past, they weren't overly successful when it comes to recognition and album sales.

I mean, this one is definitely more firmly rooted in metalcore, which will appeal to a lot more listeners, so I understand it from that aspect. I just think that some of the songs are sloppily constructed and the variation from song to song seems forced. The neutered sound in the instrumentals is what gets to me the most. Henry is a great singer, it's just that when he is singing over songs that are stripped of their signature aggression, it will sound boring and uninspired.

Hey this debuted at 94, which is higher than anything they have ever released by 10 spots. Obviously this payed off for them. Btw, this album kicks ass.

I was just about to post about this debuting at 94, which I personally find sickening. This will likely lead to them producing more garbage in this vein. Sigh

On the bright side, maybe due to more people checking out this album and liking their new sound they will in turn start listening to their older material and perhaps farther down the line get into more underground metal. The beauty of selling out if you will.

That's a fair point, game. Although I have always thought DH to be a fairly easy band to get into if you like metal.

true, but they dont have boring breakdowns or an image that appeals to teenagers. probably why they havent really done too well.
