"Holy shit, Amph likes this. Maybe there's hope."
I only really started liking it when I stopped comparing it to their other works and started listening to it for what it is. I think the whole "damn, I was hoping for more of a -insert Agalloch album here- kind of sound" or "this isn't nearly as good as -insert Agalloch album here-" attitude I had was a big part of the initial disappointment I had with it.
It's also not an album I can just put on and enjoy while doing other things; if I do that, it seems like a really bland, boring album. I have to give it my full 100% attention because it's a lot of the little details and nuances in the background of a lot of it that really started to get me hooked.

amph: that first comment of yours is what i think the problem is for many. i've been guilty of approaching albums like that in the past as well. i guess it's hard to enjoy something like this when the albums preceding it are so much better, but it is ultimately unfair. i did the same thing last year with boards of canada. no matter how many times i heard tomorrow's harvest i can't help but compare it to their (infinitely) better, earlier works

Yeah it's definitely hard to not compare it to their earlier albums, but each Agalloch album is so different from the next that it really doesn't make much sense to compare them. Each album is its own beast.

"each album is its own beast"
Definitely agree with that. I see how someone could be disappointed though if they go into this album with certain expectations

This album just needs your undivided attention and it'll show it's magic to you

Thanks man. Glad some people are still reading it even after Crysis posted his lol

I actually love how split the site is over this album. Really opens up a lot of potential to debate

Awesome review man, I really need to hear this.

Agalloch in a nutshell
|

This sounds pretty solid to me so far, the 2's and below are really confusing.
That being said, Agalloch has never been as good as most people here seem to think.

The bad ratings for this are laughable as hell

I don't hate this, I just don't like it and it feels kind of poor to me.
It changed quite a bit when I read the lyrics.

I still haven't listened to this. Is it comparable to MOTS?
|
| |
its not bad, but the only song that really stood out for me was Plateau of the Ages
|
| |
Is it comparable to MOTS?
not really imo but there are some moments that remind me of pale folklore (especially celestial effigy). for the most part though, it's very much unlike the band's other stuff

Much like every other Agalloch album before it, it sounds totally different yet somehow the same. The production on this makes it sound so much more massive than anything else they've done and I think one of the reasons I was initially disappointed is because it requires more times to be able to hear and pick out everything that's happening.
I have to disagree with the album losing steam at the end though being that Plateau is probably my second favourite track off of this after Dark Matter Gods

@Scream, that track has grown on me a bit, but overall I just like the first half of the album better which is why I mentioned that it loses some momentum. I just noticed you reviewed this too, stoked to read it and glad it got another positive review!
