I love that, probably my favourite thing about his vocals here, love it when he does the same on the title track (best song) :D

I have a high tolerance for technically 'bad singing' though (within reason of course), I have more of a problem with overly 'perfectly hit the top notes'/smooth vocals - hence I struggle with straight country more than you

I hated it on the title track too, whoops xD

I wouldn't say it's "bad singing" though, it just doesn't work within the context of the songs.

I think they're unique, make this more playful, results in a fun n' loose album. They add a bit of the ol' feminine to the mix but it could mean Grant Lee ain't your boy.

I'm probably judging too soon, I've done this before, 5 listens from now it'll be a 4.5 ;-)

Some singers take a while to get used to, and often they end up favourites, I'm predicting a Boney 4 for this ;D

This is definitely alt rock.

RYM has it characterized as alt-country, Americana and indie rock, so I was expecting something more in the vein of Son Volt, Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, etc, so perhaps my feelings on this were affected by not getting what I expected.

I'm shocked you think the vocals are off. Some of the best ever for me.

When he's not in the high register the vocals are fine.

Strangely Grace is my fave on this so far. Speaks to the rocker hidden inside me.

Ok, I think this is setting some hooks in (pun intended). I have a feeling one day I'm going to revisit it and it'll hit ten times harder.

I don't know if there's any particular hard hitters here per se. Its just an all out classic album of melodies and beautifully crafted songs that breathe and have a freshness to them that for me haven't aged a jot in the 25yrs I've been listening to the thing.

Interesting, there's certainly a level of craft here but I feel if I were to find this a classic it would be more for sentimental reasons.

And they want to have a child

Walk together down the aisle

But the world they live in is mean

And it's built on sheer denial
