According to me the best songs here are lower than the best songs on Blackbird (and maybe lower than the best songs on AB3). The album is consistent though, as Ties said, no big filler and the album is shorter than AB3 (which was too long) ...

I think Blackbird is slightly better. One reason being for the song Blackbird. No doubt the best song AB has ever done period. Other than that, I find this album to have a couple of duds here and there. The Uninvited and All Ends Well in particular, though I'm not saying their bad songs. I just think they aren't AB's best. And for some reason, I can't get that interested in Calm the Fire. Probably because I don't find it that memorable, other than Myles falsetto in the beginning. This is probably AB's second best album. I mean if I had those wonderful staff powers, I'd give this like a 4.1 or 4.2. But I can't give it a 4.5. Though the first three tracks, Water's Rising, and the title track are no doubt the best on this album.

Honestly i think the biggest duds on the album are The Uninvited and Cry a River and they are both still good. I like All Ends Well, but i think it would fit more on ABIII, but i understand its purpose here.

Cry a River is actually a pretty good track. I wouldn't really call it a dud.

An exceptional hard rock album that finds Alter Bridge at a creative high.

Still think Blackbird is their best offering so far, but this is probably their second best (III had its moments too, but I don't really ever feel compelled to listen to it). This album has some of the best riffs they've written as well as some really great leadwork. The problem is when the sappy choruses come in and take a big dump on all of the greatness before it. Like they are trying to please two seperate audiences at the same time. It feels too much like they just can't let their Creed past entirely go when writing AB material. I feel like Lover is an extremely weak track, and All Ends Well is also another Creed song leftover from One Day Remains. The rest are all solid to really good though.
Bleed It Dry could have also been written by Nevermore. Well, almost. Nevermore would have done it better, but it's a killer track regardless.

I wouldn't say there are any duds on here, I think it's the most consistent album they've done. Blackbird maybe just edges it for now, but if they had released Fortress in 2007 and Blackbird in 2013, I'd probably say Fortress was their best. Bias toward an older album.

Definitely some solid work on this album. Mark in particular has grown a lot as a guitarist. Overall, I'm at about a 3.7 for this album half way through so far.

Anyone else feel "Farther Than the Sun" is like "Before Tomorrow Comes"? I see it as being an upcoming single. It's a pretty "safe" song, with a catchy as hell chorus, but still gives the effect of the band's potential. Probably just me.

I was pretty disappointed by ABIII, but I'll give this a shot due to my love of Blackbird and their first album as well.

AB3 is great (perhaps better than this one) but too long.

With the 2 or 3 good songs (the rest is average at best) that Myles wrote (I'm talking about
the lyrics) for Slash 2nd album and with 2 or 3 songs from Tremonti' solo album this
would have been their masterpiece...
Lyrics here are often too short (10 sentences at best) it's a bit disappointing.
