You'd imagine that the first album bearing their band's name in over 20 years would be something unique and special, which I kind of hoped for.

As tepid as Dream Theater releases have been for the last ten years, the epics have usually been the
saving graces of their respective albums. I couldn't even muster excitement for Illumination Theory
here, no matter how hard my younger-self wanted to.

This still rules imo. It's far less "safe" than their last few releases but it does take a few more listens to realise. The band were intentionally going for a more streamlined sound. I don't know why people keep expecting them to reinvent the wheel every time, they're far more varied than the majority of bands out there.
