I have it at like a 3.5 now, but I want to give it a few more listens and let it sink in before I judge it. I can honestly say I enjoy it a lot more than The Slip though. I think Reznor's crafted some of his most infectious hooks. To me, the choruses seem more arena-oriented than anything he's made. It's like the earworm accessibility of the songs off of With Teeth, but with Reznor actually embracing his age, and integrating some intricate production and some new additions to his arsenal of electronic noises.

I actually need to try The Slip again, I enjoy more ambient music now and I think it may appeal a bit more. I'd not really made the comparison between this and With Teeth, though I can see where it makes sense in some ways.
His recent live shows definitely make it clear that he's pretty comfy without all the stage/music video antics of his older days, embracing his age is a nice description for the album as a whole I suppose.

"Easier to say a song 'wouldn't be out of place on TDS', than something original. Because we all know TDS and know what you mean."
isnt that kinda the point though? if you know what i mean then why would i draw it out with an original description when nothing original needs to be said (even though i did describe it in the second paragraph). it sounds like it couldve been off TDS, which in itself is a compliment because that album is amazing.

I think you might be thinking of Ghosts. That was completely ambient. Only ambient music I remember off of The Slip was that one track Corona Radiata.

What a stellar review!
I noticed this album sounded like both PHM and Year Zero in the way that there was dance synths but builds on songs. It's a combination that makes this album go smooth. I've noticed this is the Year Of The Flop/Refinment. Almost all the artist I follow that put something out this year has done an album with this formula.... Yet no complaints.

I hope this isn't one of those 'We have to give it a good score cos it's a good band' ratings. I'm anticipating some dissappointment and from the sounds of the review I think I won't like it. Happy? Poppy? Wtf. My preorder comes soon but I don't want to get my hopes up too high.

SalteyBacon, how true. I dont know how many Pearl Jam followers out there, I stopped with Yield but Lightning Bolt so far seems like it could be the refinement they needed.

I really don't get the love for "All Time Low", I really think it's out of place on this album.

I have always thought about giving NIN a try, but never really got around to it. I mostly just know The Hand that Feeds and Closer and maybe a few other random songs.

Don't start here.

So you're saying a valid criticism is that you were surprised because you had expectations for how something sounds based on the music regularly put out under a band's name? I'd love to know what you think of Ulver's recent work then.
Well that's a lot different, I honestly think it's strange for anyone to conclude that if an artist has different material they want to put out they should just start another side-project. Names shouldn't factor in that heavily, and what I'm mainly wondering is whether or not Wiz is basing that point he made on a matter of the music's quality, or JUST because it's a different sound for Nine Inch Nails and it wasn't put under another artist's name.
Hahahaha ya got me on that one, exceptions to the rule ; ). Ulver is one of those bands I can actually say sounded better with a change in music styles. However, you can't actually listen to this and tell me this sounds remotely like a proper NIN album (besides his voice which is even getting weaker with age tbqh). It's watered down electronic shit. If this came out by any other band, no one would appreciate it. So to answer your second paragraph, the lack of quality and the fact this album to my ears is a gapping wound in NIN's discography is my biggest problem. Reznor was so good at molding poppy art out of dark subject matter and I fail to hear his talented gift anywhere on here.
And I don't mean to come in here and bash opinions. Insurrection has done a fantastic job at presenting himself.

I think "The Hand That Feeds" is one of the worst songs he's ever written. Just awful.

Na for real, very good review.

The lyrics are pretty corny on this. I don't know why Reznor feels he has to rhyme the end of every two lines.

In regards to "With Teeth", that album rocks. Not as good as the The Fragile or TDS however it is way better than Year Zero and The Slip.
|

The Fragile is best anyways, it might have shitty lyrics but they're memorably terrible.

TDS has a better progression than the Fragile, but The Fragile is a hard classic.

I think a lot of it depends on how old you were when TDS and The Fragile came out. I was 14 for the former, and 20 for the latter. So I felt The Fragile was a bit anti-climactic, given how long we'd all been waiting for it. It's strange because it has some of NIN's best music, but push-button lyrics. I appreciate it a bit more these days, but it's not an album that ever meant all that much to me.
