interesting claim, funny, but interesting. anyway, i just have to know what a popular guitar sounds like. i actually love this album, and when i listen to it, i feel neither edgy, nor rebellious, i feel like im listening to good music.

I would, but I somehow doubt you want another essay. The problem is, it sounds like you're looking at this through a very narrow perspective of definitions. Trying to define the sound of a particular instrument within a genre is a rather nebulous concept. Unless you want a vague generalization, better known as a stereotype.
In some cases, it's a little easier. Death metal drummers tend to use blast beats.
Other times, you have a genre like pop which is so nebulous it boggles the mind. Pop is one of the most diverse genres of all, making it nigh impossible to create an archetypal pop sound for a specific instrument.
when i listen to it, i feel neither edgy, nor rebellious, i feel like im listening to good music.
Aside from the fact that there's no accounting for taste, I don't think you quite got the point either when I was describing marketing. This Message Edited On 05.07.06

i think you might have misunderstood the popular guitar thing, i just got that out of 2 previous comments and decided to have a good laugh out of it. as for the marketing, i've yet to see a commercial or music video from this album, so that explains the whole me misunderstanding your motive.

Consider yourself lucky. They're quite nauseating.

The reason they have only Brandon singing is because it makes the commercials more accessible. Atreyu's catchiest melodies and hooks are all in the choruses. Exactly like a pop song.
Now, there are other genres that have big, sing-along choruses. But Atreyu doesn't qualify for any of them. They're certainly not power metal, for example.

I really hate this band. You know what? I kind of enjoy it when people come on here and act like it's a chatroom. Get to take people down a notch.

They're featured in a couple of Victory Records commerials, have a couple of music videos that get on Headbanger's Ball, and have several magazine ads and a sponsorship from Hot Topic.
They don't saturate the media with the images, because they know the target audience isn't that stupid. They have to market them as if they're a counterculture phenomenon, which requires a much more subtle touch.

I believe that's the tuning Collective Soul uses. Just thought I'd mention it.
And I don't remember how the song goes, but I think you thinking of a pinch harmonic. This Message Edited On 05.07.06

Pluck a string with your thumb right after you use the pick, I think.
|
| |
There's a lesson or two on the sites somewhere. You brush the string with your thumb or finger as soon as you pick it. You have to experiment a bit to get the touch right and find the sweet spot on the string.

You wouldn't have an idea, would you? As for the pinch harmonics, it takes practice.

Counterculture is made up of the scenes, cultures, groups, and attitudes that operate outside of the mainstream, but manage to maintain a very healthy presence through grassroots organization. Independent film has a lot of counterculture around it. Goth is a counterculture. Until Jackass came along, skating used to be a counterculture.
Atreyu, with their lead singer using harsh vocals (badly), and writing with melodramatic themes and overtones makes it seem as if the band came from one of these counterculture scenes. And people have a fascination with counterculture because people in those scenes know that the key to being cool is to do things differently and memorably.
Atreyu perhaps fancied themselves a counterculture band at one point. I don't know. But Victory Records scooped them up, realizing that with proper marketing, they could dupe a lot of people into thinking they were edgy by listening to this band. However, Victory Records are some of the most soulless media whores on the planet, so...

Try extracting a pinch harmonic from the D-string from the second fret. Distortion also is a necessity. This Message Edited On 05.07.06
