This is greg we are talking about here, though.

Oh, Jacob, "The Refusal" is the track I was thinking of.

After quite a few listens, this album is definitely a let-down. Some of the songs are fantastic, but as I've stated before the album is very poorly arranged.

It is like Koloss and L'enfant Sauvage all over again. Everything I loved about their sound has been forced into the background and everything I didn't care for is in the spotlight.

Tips for Karnivool's next album:
. Get rid of the fucking interludes, they do nothing for the music
. Get Forrester back to produce the album, I don't care if you feel like it's cheating, I'd rather
have another Sound Awake then anything else.
. Ian Kenny, please turn your focus to Karnivool and away from Birds of Tokyo
. Don't go mental on time signatures
. And for the love of God, please don't take another 4 years to make another album, the overwhelming
hype for this is something that could not have been lived up to.

And quit trying to be experimental for the sake of being experimental.

Pretty much. I do feel like they went a bit crazy on the "Hey, look at the drum pattern!" front. May
drop this to a 3.5

Hoestly, I think they got sick of being compared to Tool so they decided to be experimental in their own way. This distanced the Tool influence, but also took away what made them so listenable. :/

Gonna keep at a solid 4 but I'm dissapointed in this. There was a time when I thought this would be my AOTY as well. It's an excellent album after growing for a few weeks but after 4 years of waiting I was expecting Sound Awake level quality, but only Sky Machine and Aeons reach that for me.
New DLC is much better. Also, Tool's new album better be a 5/5 or otherwise, biggest disappointment in music. Just put Birds of Tokyo on hiatus till Karnivool have made another album and put all your focus and energy in it, get Forrester back and your original sound.
Now I don't wanna sound like one of those guys that is like "Old was better herp derp go back to old skool sound" but when your original sound was a 5/5 then yeah......go back to it hahaha.

They don't need to go back to their old sound. They just need to focus on writing better songs and cutting out the filler.
|

I dont see how a 4 rating can be a let down
|
| |
It can be when you were expecting close to a 5 from this band. Its not impossible to listen to an album, enjoy it and yet still feel disappointed.

When an artist is consistent 4.5/5, yeah it can be a let down. Just for the record, this def isn't a 4
for me. It is feeling like yet another 3.
Drummer, seriously, Tool if they even make a record will NEVER live up to 7+ years of inactivity.
|
| |
yeah buts its pretty unlikely this band would come up with 5 or even 4.5 materiel
As for Tool I'd be happy with even a high 3.5/low 4 for their next record as they are all getting
older and most likely wont top Aenima or Lateralus

Album Rating: 3.5
I rated a 4 just for some of the songs. If I were to rate the cohesiveness of the whole album it would be 3-3.5.
But I would feel bad doing that. This isn't bad, just tragically inconsistent.

"Tool if they even make a record will NEVER live up to 7+ years of inactivity."
Closed-minded much? Who says they have to live up to ANYTHING, let alone your expectations about what kind of album you think they owe you.
|
| |
im surprised none of you guys have mentioned Aeons, one of my favorites here for sure
|
| |
Album Rating: 3.5
Aeons is fantastic. If they'd ditched everything but the seven minute songs, We Are, Float, and
Eidolon, they'd have been half way to an album near Sound Awake quality.

In ways this album's situation reminds me of 10,000 days
Big wait, big hype, average record; both had the highest of highlights and some of the shittiest low points for their respective bands. Also, both albums are overflowing with useless filler (Lipjan Conjuring, Amusia, blah)
Also anyone else thinking 'Asymmetry' and that one interlude on Aenima are unusually similar? Usually I'm one to defend Karnivool and reject the Tool comparisons because to be honest, I haven't really heard it on their previous two albums; this one, however...

All I have to say on that is the UK house music comparison I made in the review.
