The fact that he jumped directly from his typical garbage straight into a track like this makes it so obvious to me that he just wants to be like "hey look I'm a deep producer too". The fact that he went straight for the Burial sound too, and that it's so clearly imitation work and not something he actually thought up on his own (at all) makes me despise it. If he genuinely showed any signs of actually wanting to produce some deeper stuff, then I'd be fine with it, but I don't think that's what's happening there.

it's quite easy to just fall into the trap of just imitating burial tbh though. maybe he just doesn't know how to expand the sound. there's loads of burial clones around cos of that reason

Skrillex isn't a burial clone though, he's already hugely famous because of his own sound and he made a one-off track that just happens to be imitation work of the most critically acclaimed producer in the dubstep genre.

I wonder what his motivation is. He's already stated that he's influenced by Burial, Aphex Twin etc.

Maybe he literally was just sick of being the figure he is, and tried to branch into "deeper stuff".

In that case, this is just showing up how poor a producer he actually is.
