Well, I'd say that this one is up there with their greats but it is definitely the most excessive they've ever been. Soundtracks is rather bloated as well with two discs and a lot of interludes, but there's a chance you would like it more than this one.
Children of God seems like the best starting point and is their most balanced album. I would go with it next.
I'm not a Swans expert since I haven't heard all of their stuff.

Intronaut's new album (release next spring) will be best 2012 album by proxy. As it stands, Al Azif (The Great Old Ones) gets my nod, with The Flesh Alive (Gojira), Live VI (Isis) , RIITIIR, and Teratogenesis (Revocation) filling out the ballot.
Also Potato, you forgot to come up with a clever play on Honor Found in Decay. While we're at it let's just go ahead and make this thread the AOTY thread.
