3.5 band. None of their albums ever stood out to me. Haven't heard the most recent one, but I doubt it's any better.

Very much a 3.5 band. Lower the Blade and This Will Do the Job are probably two of their best songs.

Don't know what influenced me to come back to this. I've given Car Bomb multiple chances and Meta and Mordial have never stuck. This one is different. It avoids a lot of the pitfalls that come up on later albums. That being the herky-jerky stop-and-go structuring of songs where there seems to be no connective tissue and just a smattering of interesting ideas clipped individually into a "song". It's very Meshuggah-inspired with the recursive riffing and polyrhythmic stylings--harkening back to DEI and Nothing at times. Songs actually sound like complete ideas which helps when grappling with what's going on. Finish It and Lower the Blade are standouts simply because they aren't of the atypical variety. Third Revelation and Recursive Patterns are more on the insane side of things.

It's funny how without vocals, his stuff sort of sounds like he's demoing gear rather than composing actual songs. La Grande is one big NAMM demonstration. Don't get me wrong, the talent is undeniable. Riffs on Sphyxia are fucking fantastic and heavy and blah blah blah, but none of these songs hit like CAFO or something else from Animals as Leaders whose songs seem composed to be strictly instrumental. I dunno, music is hard.

"christbait dawg the difference you’re looking for is the hxc influence ratio"
I'm gonna sound stupid: are you saying that his solo stuff lacks the same hxc ratio as Car Bomb or Animals as Leaders?
