"it hasn't become a noun because of time and usage, it is a noun in that context because it is the word for a certain category of music, and is independent of the word "popular" which describes that category. a category is a thing, and is therefore a noun"

My brother in christ, language evolves and words gain legitimacy through their usage. The only reason we have a genre called pop is because enough people talked about a certain style of music as "popular" for a distinct new noun to form to mean such music. The adjective "pop" gave birth to the noun "pop". And when discussing music genre, people could be using either form of that word... pop as an adjective, or pop as a noun

How can you say the noun "pop" is independent of the descriptor "popular", when people can use "pop" to mean both things?

nobody says "pop" as a shorthand for "popular" though. but yes language evolves and I think this thread has proven it devolves sometimes too

I’d love to hear Colt’s interpretation of the term ‘indie pop’, preferably with a linked PowerPoint presentation

People use pop as shorthand for popular all the time? When someone talks about pop metal, they might be referring to radio-friendly metal that is written in a certain mass-appeal sort of way... or they might be referring to metal bands that are very popular and in the mainstream consciousness.

If someone referred to Mastodon as pop metal, I would assume they were referring to their popularity and success within the metal genre, and not so much to their musical style

Probably safe to say that whatever Colton’s take is is the biggest L here as he barely even meets the minimum cognitive requirements to be discussing umbrella genres let alone descriptors and sub genres

Pop culture

Pop psychology

Pop fiction etc

Pop being short for popular extends past musical terms anyway … I feel like pop psychology is particularly perjorative though

Honestly the (relatively minor) criminal shit I’ve done doesn’t actually compare to the worst thing I’ve done (which shall remain confidential).

“Are you serious “

Yep. Can’t blame him tho, his guitar teacher doesn’t think he’s ready for Seven Nation Army just yet.
