I get what DuMont is saying but
but I think it can be better defined as rap which tends towards more white middle class sensibilities
people act like this doesn't apply to rap like Lil B, A$AP Rocky, Odd Future etc. Not that I don't dig some of that stuff too (I like Main Attrakionz, Earl, Clams and a few others), but we shouldn't pretend that suburban white kids driving their parents' SUVs are listening to that just as much if not more than El-P, Atmosphere and the like.

You're right, colour doesn't mean shit, but it would be equally non-sensical to have complete disregard for the cultural meanings in those types of music. The phrase "white person rap" has come about because hip-hop is a genre which was founded almost entirely by black lyricists and producers and for years exclusively dealt with African-American centric issues - some rap is seen as a step too far away from this and some people aren't comfortable with what they see as hip-hop being co-opted to send completely different cultural messages.
Killer Mike's title of his latest LP illustrates this - in an interview he explained that the "R.A.P" in "R.A.P Music" stands for Rebellious African People. Some people prefer hip-hop that adheres more strictly to this - personally I enjoy the variation.
Inveigh I agree with you as well, which is why the colour distinction is a total misfire.

I hate people who called Rap a genre. Rap is just the spoken word, Hip Hop is the amalgam of the beats and spoken words. It's like calling Death Metal 'Tremolo picking, blast beats and growls'
Try not to lose any sleep over it.

DuMont speaking truth in this thread

again, I get where you're coming from to a certain extent. but by that line of thinking, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin were just "white person blues." Dave Brubek was just "white person jazz." Sublime and Slightly Stoopid are "white person reggae," and on and on...
basically what i'm trying to say is... black people invented all music

So.. where's the "Black Person Classical", "Black Person Death/Thrash/Black/Doom Metal", "Black Person Indie", "Black Person Folk" ...[..]..

@Inveigh: I agree with you, I wasn't defending the phrase, just saying why I think it has come about. As I said it's not a useful or accurate description at all.
Still don't dig this as much as Vessel, do really like it though

word. yea I think I came off overly confrontational (which tends to happen when I'm discussing/debating music), though it was certainly not my intention.
I just hate the mindset expressed earlier in this thread (not by you DuMont) that hip hop like this isn't legitimate because a lot of white people listen to it. It's just like the idiots that dismiss any rap they don't view as "conscious"

"so he goes and gets the whitest fuck in the game to produce the entire album..."
Not to mention the fact that Mike was featured on the white fuck's album multiple times.
