Wasn't really getting that even listening for it, but I mean they're like middle aged now so I'm sure he's not at his peak. Still sounds great to me though, and liking the song a lot more than that one-off they did 4 years ago, which was ~fine~ but didn't really feel up to their calibre.
Drone wasn't their best song I've ever heard but as a single and as a first taste I think it worked really well, catchy banger with some very Jon Stockman bass. I'm so ready for this album just to listen to Stockman/Judd going at it but also every single other thing my god it's been 12 years lets fucking goooooooooooooo

Anyone else have the problem of not understanding what the hell he’s singing about? Like Simple Boy is full of contradictions lol

That's my problem with prog in general. To me Karnivool is for emotions, not logic.

I've got to try Asymmetry. Not too fond of Themata.
The new singles are pretty good.

@pourradass two things:
1. how come you don't like themata
2. Definitely give Asymmetry a shot. It’s mighty weird in a good way. The artwork is great too.

1. I like Karnivool for their atmospheric and progressive sound, whereas Themata seems more like a straight-forward rock/metal sound. I've only listened to it one and a half times but I remember finding the sound less meaty. Also the play times seem to give credence to my initial impression.
2. Just finished my first listen, went smoothly! Definitely noticed a few quirks, but then Alpha Omega rolled on and all was well in the world

1. Point. I like to think of Themata as ambient-metal, definitely more on the alternative side (although I find it very atmospheric, mainly because of the ambient).
2. Glad you like it. It took me years to appreciate that album, I think it's the most avant-garde they got. Any favourite songs?

1. Gave it another listen yesterday and my feeling was that I don't find that first track all that compelling, but then it's all good for the next three. I'm ambivalent about Roquefort. L1FEl1KE is pretty bad, reminds me of Science-era Incubus which are great, but not what I'd expect from these guys. I think the second half of the record stands out but not in a good way.
2. Alpha Omega, The Refusal, The Last Few are my current stand-outs.

1. Interesting how opposite our opinions are, the opener, the cheese song and the typo title song are some of my favourites. Themata is also the primary case of me not getting the lyrics until experiencing an emotional tremor, C.O.T.E. and Sewn and Silent still give me shivers for that reason.
2. AΩ and The Refusal are mine as well, along with Nachash and Eidolon (specifically because it's the most Thematic song there). Though, ironically, the one I listen to the most is the drum solo interlude. I like to put it on playlists before drumbeat starting stuff like Litvintroll's Karaleuskaja.

The Incubus SCIENCE similarity with that song is spot on, always gives me that vibe and it's a song I skip pretty often lmao, definitely feels like them trying something out that's not really in their wheelhouse and it's not dogshit or anything but not really what I'm here for.
COTE and Sewn and Silent are stone cold classics and still some peak Ian vocal performances.
Also a big Asymmetry fan despite how much undue hate that album gets, though it did take quite a bit longer to grow on me than Sound Awake and it doesn't feel like as much of a classic album, it's brilliant and different. Alpha, Sky Machine, and Aeons are so fuckin good. WHY THE HELL DID I SPEAAAAAAAAAK THE TRUUUUUUUUUTH? So many good peak goosebumps moments. We Are is also a really solid single and just cool as hell song overall.
The new singles are good, I've had the Aozora chorus in my head since I heard the live version on youtube like a decade ago and finally getting a studio version is extremely cathartic. Hoping for something a little denser/weirder on the album but as singles they're all a great start.
