I've always hated "Drops of Jupiter," but this sounds a world different from that.

I havent listened to this entire album by any means but i did catch the song "50 Ways to Say Goodbye" which i really enjoyed. I heard the song on XM in the car and i quickly downloaded it a short time later. I can see how you think they're moving strongly in the direction of pop, but im compelled to think they may be moving in a better direction. Bands over time need to change their sound to keep people listening and i think this song did a really good job of adding some new elements. The song is based around this mexican trumpet melody which is really interesting the way they integrated their "Train" style into this (or vice versa). There are some really strong vocal melodies in the verses of this song. I really didnt enjoy the chorus as it had a little too much of a pop'y feeling to it. Not much for dynamics.
I may take a listen to the remainder of this album, but ill say this: if the rest follows the theme of this song then i would say this is actually quite a good album. Note that this is coming from someone who mainly listens to hard rock and metal.

Holy fuck, I just noticed just how much This'll Be My Year's chorus rips off an All Time Low song.

Of all the bands to rip off from, ATL isn't the wisest choice.

It's like when Sum 41 ripped off of MCR:

Or when they ripped off Blue October:

Ooh, I really liked that MCR song. And wow, that was incredibly blatant, if you ask me. Even if the verses didn't sound too much like Wolves, the style was definitely MCR-based.
Well, to be honest, the chorus Hate and Best of Me both sound (to me) like "Carry on, we'll carry on. And though I'm dead and gone believe me, your memory will carry on."

Sum 41 hasn't written an original song since Chuck
And I'm glad you liked the MCR song. For as much hate as they get, they're one of those bands I'll always have some respect for.

Yeah they are very stylistic in that you can easily recognize that it's their song (or someone that ripped them off).
I've always disliked Sum 41. Whatever.
On the case of It'll Be My Year. Was it really such a good idea to make it a timeline sort of thing? I mean, that's a great idea if it was a coherent story in itself rather than a stupid list. Don't get me started with the 9/11 part on the bridge. Mad cheesy, as was the 2012 part. As is pretty much the entire album.

I dont think I could agree more with this review if I tried. This train wreck of an album is by far the WORST TRAIN ALBUM EVER! What were they thinking!?
Hey....lets make a record with lyrics impressive only to teenage girls and lets see if we can make every other song sound like a Hey Soul Sister clone.
If this is their new direction, count me out. I have never been so bitterly disappointed in an album by a band I love so much and have for so long. Why are they trying to be a insipid "boy band" for pete's sake!?
I just cant get over just how bad this new album is. It doesnt even sound like Train anymore. I am seeing them tonight in St Louis, but after reading that they are playing most of this new awful album and only a brief "medley" of all their great older songs, this will be my first Train concert (my 9th) where I am actually more excited to see the warm up acts (Andy Grammer and Mat Kearney) than I am to see Train, which is sadly pathetic.
It's pretty bad when the truth is that the best Train album of the last 4-5 years was Pat Monahan's solo album "Last Of Seven". I'd be happy to hear half of that album than this new garbage. This will probably be my last Train concert if this is where Train is heading.
