I guess I can see where that would be frustrating, speaking for myself (coming from a tradition where creativity in making original music is prized above all else)

Wait so he doesn't even really use other beats but just samples them? And I guess add turntable scratches (which no one should ever ever ever ever ever do. Turntable scratches sound so cheesy I can't even begin to talk about it)

Well, traditional hip hop is always sample based. Shit, how do you think a tribe called quest got most their beats..?

"Well, traditional hip hop is always sample based."
There's a difference between sample-based beats and most of your samples actually being from other beats lol.

Yeah, I am new to hip hop, so I am going to throw up my dubs here...

exactly. I think what Lute did was just take like 30-45 second (or less) snippets of his favorite beats and looped them for entire tracks. Not even really a sample in the traditional sense of the word...

I think we all agree that this is awesome
perhaps not as good as Nas
some serious sampling has taken place, some of us are pissed, some not
|
| |
I'm not pissed, I honestly don't really care since I didn't care for this mixtape enough to download it in the first place but I just thought it was kinda funny.

nah, I mean it's pretty ok but all we're really judging here are the raps and there are quite a few bad verses
but I mean this is a mixtape in the truest sense of the word in that he's just rapping over other people's beats so that people get an idea of what he's all about
sampling is completely different. for instance, most of the time it involved looping a portion of a drum beat from some funk song (or programming your own drums) then adding a sampled bass line from a different song, an maybe adding some keys of your own and some other sample on top.
sampling is not just taking an instrumental track from an Outkast record and recording your own verse to it.

Five 5s, rly?
I feel like people are giving this a higher score than they would otherwise because they feel like mixtape is their little Sputnik secret lol.

There are no 5's.... And this keeps finding its way into my playlist, constantly, so that's why I have it at 4.5.
|
| |
o woops nevermind the little bar graph was messed up for me so the 4.5s were at the very end and looked like 5s.

Yea don't worry, I won't be 5ing this. That's what the academy is for.

Exactly, it's not a problem at all from my point of view, I'm just curious to hear him on original beats since this mixtape is very good.
So I guess I am a bit frustrated but not pissed at all though

It would be amazing if Lute pairs up with a producer who loves sampling jazz and funk. I definitely think he should stick with the vibe he has now.

bright side: this is good
glass half empty: this is just a mixtape
On 5ing this: I would've 5'd Eminem (back in the day, when I was into hip-hop), even though he samples a lot of other people's music (Dido etc.), and even though Eminem is complete Shit (capital S).
This is actually good, 4.5
