First Kayo Dot album I listened to, definatly an experience.
Seeing this band live is also a great experience.
It's like Isis on acid or mushrooms.
| | | Gave this a listen recently, but I don't find this nearly as enjoyable as Choirs Of The Eye.
| | | I should probably feel left out for not liking motw at all or not liking kayo dot much, but instead I just feel like everybody else is insane.
That said, the most I can complain about here is the awful ambience. Waiting for minutes for some real music to happen is unacceptable. Someone who likes drone shouldn't be able to get bored, dammit. This Message Edited On 01.08.09

What defines "real music?"
I'm assuming you're going to say, "like chords and shit man," so ya, please prove me wrong.
| | | Real music? Sound, preferably. I'm really just talking about Imortelle, after the more poppy part ends. It's just a little too slow, I think. Drags out. That said...
___ on Limpid Form = Holy shit
edit: Bleh, I'm stupid. The ambience isn't that bad. It's just not enjoyable for me. I won't deny that this is a great album anymore. Now onto choirs...This Message Edited On 01.08.09
| | | Funny, today I randomly listened to Imortelle on the way to a lecture almost just to hear the ambient part (the whole thing was thoroughly enjoyed, though).

"Metal to me has always seemed over done, badly produced and incredibly repetitive (but not in a good way)
I've listened to plently of metal in my time. I don't criticize things before I listen to them, I've heard plently of metal bands in my time. People are constantly trying to get me into it. But, it's all very similar. I mean sure there are tons of genres, death, doom, black, power, grind, etc. but in those genres most of the bands sound like one overall great band that they are all trying to copy. (Cryptopsy in Death Metal for example). I only see this kind of pointlessness in metal and pop-punk. Anyways, negging my review because of an opinion is retarded. It's a good review, and you guys are just being asses because I hurt your little feelings."
Reminds me of women saying all men are equal, which again reminds me of no woman possibly having so much experience. That said, no genre in the world has so much diversity like Metal. When you compare Psyopus or Messhuggah with Metallica you suddenly see the difference, or even compare two bands withing the same genre Unexpect and Meshuggah. Of course, there are tons of boring metal bands out there, and for many Kayo Dot and MOTW are amongst those bands since maaany of their songs are slow and reminiscent of post rock...as a matter of fact, most of their songs ARE post rock and have NOTHING to do with Metal and CERTAINLY nothing with Avant Garde. Of course, it fits into the scheme of the reviewer not liking metal as these bands have very little to do with metal. As for the "I've listened to a lot of metal bands in my time," well, I suggest you seriously take that back, I've haven't heard a more stupid comment in days considering the first sentence quotes above.
Now onto both bands... Their both ok, nothing spectacular, NOTHING avant-garde, just your ordinary mesh of post rock and black metal (mind you, not even death, no technical nature whatsoever). There are good songs on some albums, there are bad songs, but none of them are either good or bad enough to be remembered.

holy shit how did everyone miss this gem of a post above me.

NOTHING avant-garde
lol. WTF this guy even know what avant-garde is?
no technical nature whatsoever
Just because it is not shredding doesn't mean it isn't technical. ie. the trumpet parts before the dissonance in ___On Limpid Form, or any violin part.
no genre in the world has so much diversity like Metal
This is such a void argument. You're an idiot.
| | | Well it's the same thing as with the review, just the opposite. That said, it's indeed a stupid thing to say, not to mention highly false. On the music, I still can't listen to it. Think I'm gonna rate it now.

That clown gave 3 PsyOpus albums straight 5s.....get real.
| | | Okay, I'm just doing this post to get it out of my mind. I don't expect anyone to read it or whatever, but I need closure. Obviously I'm talking about your metal statement. I'm not siding with some other acounts proclaiming metal as the "most experimental" genre ever, that's just as inane as the first paragraph. The thing is: that paragraph came over as a rather higher-than-thou rant. It's that mentality some people indeed may have, those mainly listening to mid-heavy progressive-tinted bands. Somehow that part was hailed as truthful and it seemed to me most well-respected people here considered it an intellectual thing to say. I'm quite baffled by the closemindedness on this thread of a paragraph that immediately started with a sentence that bothered me the most. It started with a description of why you don't (didn't?) like metal. Ironically you considered yourself a open-minded person and followed that by disliking the whole metal genre, for stereotypical reasons no less. Of course it's all up to you to dislike whatever you want, but the idea behind it was atrocious. The explanation was meager and full of stereotypes. Strangely it was well picked up by other respectable members of sputnikmusic. I'd thought at least 1 person here would have the rationality to disagree and the intelligence to explain. But the few people that raised eyebrows were blown to kingdome come, again with no explanation, for not-agreeing and failing to construct a single good statement. However, not was it only accepted, it was then compared to pop-punk as far as experimentation goes. Aside from the irrelevance (pop-punk is a very young subgenre, metal is not), it was approved with the "open minded" fellows of this site. Now it may be indeed stupid to make a fuzz about a mere 2 or 3 lines, but the content was quite bothering. The attitude given to metal and those who sided with it, along with the lack of respect, while showing a complete lack of knowledge was quite disturbing. It may be that you've already recognized your faults, especially since this review is almost 4 years old. I just hope not only you, but many people with the same musical taste as you (quite a lot of people like you (musical taste-wise) have a rather higher-than-thou view on metal and its fans) may realise how douchebaggery you can be. Oh and one thing:
Finally, a band that wasnt afraid to step so far out of the boundaries of metal that it didnt even sound like it anymore. Nice contradiction.

OMG that both guys with the low ratings talking shit bout Kayo Dot ---> THE FUCK OUT Clowns.. I am laughing bout you and your lousy favorite music...
the point about Dowsing is, so much potential here, sometimes it's as huge as Choirs and almost flawless, but sometimes it's not funny anymore and it's just a 3.5
problem songs are Gemini and Amaranth the Peddler(the King Crimson-Moonshine Syndrom)
___On limpid Form is the best to describe this phenomena, if you are in the right mood, it will fucking OWN your Ass, but sometimes you are getting tired and you will watch yourself skipping some parts...
got huge respect for this album though...
