Well, 2012 is the weirdest year yet. Sebastian Bach dubstep album next?

This is actually pretty good. As an old school Van Halen supporter, this is pretty damn rockin'.

I think those last 2 comments (minus any reference to a Sebastian Bach dubstep album...LOL) may just sum up this album best.

Albums tend to only become classics after a number of years. There are very few instant classics.

A lot of this stuff would be right at home among the David Lee Roth-era albums. Of course, the production's different and Dave's voice really isn't what it used to be, but you can tell they were channeling their golden years when recording this album. And, as I've said before, this is probably the most technical album they've ever made. Eddie throws in an entire toolbox of guitar dynamics with each song, and Alex showcases some really impressive drumming for his age.

I think this sits right behind VHI, II and possibly 1984 as their most solid album. I can rattle off a bunch of songs off other albums that are definitely more memorable as a whole than the new album, but VH was a singles band after VHI and II, let's be honest.
And yeah to be blunt, the majority of Top 40 is copypasta autotuned R&B shit and fake dubstep, the other part is ten bands that are Nickelback or sound vaguely like Nickelback mixed in with U2 and Coldplay or some bands that sound vaguely like U2 and Coldplay. Simplifying a lot, but to say that popular/mainstream rock music is at it's most generic state since the mid-late 80's is a vast understatement. So when a band like Van Halen comes back with arguably their best album in 30 years with balls and attitude and swagger than none of these limp dicked losers have in modern rock, it's a bigger deal than most. But that's just my 0.02

Well said to both of you. I gave 'Van Halen II' a 4 & imo, this is just behind it because Dave's voice is not quite the same & it's not quite as tight as that album... But I think that is the best comparison, not one of the later efforts.
I also agree that this is more an album, than a bunch of singles (which is a positive for the most part). Personally, I don't think VH became a singles band until after Dave left though... & that's coming from someone who thinks '5150' is severely under-rated.
