All I did was ask andcas how he knows I haven't heard this and he refuses to answer.

surely some kid going beyond pop and what gets dished out to them in the media that goes off and listens to something like Zappa or Soft Machine would actually imply having an open mind ?
Not exactly, if you refuse to accept anything poppy or not in one of your elite genres as having merit that would still make you rather closed minded. The tone you keep using sounds rather closed off, actually. You keep implying that every pop/pop-punk artist is pushed on people by the media and act like they need to listen to what you like. I actually dislike pop punk quite a bit because musically it doesn't excite me, but I wouldn't go that far. Yes, the music is safe and whitebread most of the time, but there's still an attitude that rubs me the wrong way among prog/metalheads.
I'll tell you a common thread I've observed between the most obnoxious/trolling/spamming members on this site.

Lol you probably haven't ;D
|
| |
I dont refuse to accept pop. Some pop music is wonderful.
|
| |
Andcas how do you know I haven't heard this ?
|
| |
I'm not serious lol nvmd. just funny that this argument is still going on, then again sometimes I don't know when to shut up either so I feel ya.
|
| |
And stable thats not what I said. Going beyond pop does not necessarily imply that you then don't like pop any more. But trying to experience something like that beyond the mainstream implies an open mind does it not ?

Album Rating: 2.0
I wasn't supporting either of you. I've always liked both of you guys (probably always will), but I
couldn't agree with what Menawati said and I think Andcas is being a drama queen (again).

Yes, it does. I wish I saw more people doing it in the other direction as well.

I have heard it, it's not bad at all in a poppy catchy way, quite liked 'Modern Day Love Story'. But overall it's just pop music to me thats quite pleasant.
|
| |
stable no it doesn't imply that at all. Someone can like pure pop music then go off and listen to Stravinsky, Schubert and Schumann but still like the pure pop music with no snobbery attached whatsoever.
|
| |
the only songs that are essential on this album are the first and last tracks.
|
| |
The whole album is pleasant from what I remember, quite consistent, but unremarkable. No idea what the singles were. It's just not my thing I hardly ever feel any urge for repeated listenings of this type of music.

Don't think that from what I said I am against judging or being a critic of music, there would be no reason for me to be on Sputnik if that was the case. I just prefer it to be done with an open mind.
One big thing that will make me write off an act is if they don't really have an identity of their own, when they don't have any unique ideas and repeat the same tropes that get rehashed over and over again within their genre. That's one reason I don't care much for a lot of the pop punk I hear. Of course the same can go with genres like prog and metal too, any genre.

| |
The thing is most of this type of music I've heard is all 2.5-3 stuff for me. I hardly ever hate it and hardly ever love it so I don't pursue it much. Something like The Stranglers, when I listen to that it's a lot of 4-5 material depending on the album so I keep going back to it.
|
| |
It's very hard to bring innovation in to a genre like pop punk when there's really not much in its arsenal. It's strength would be the relatable lyrics, emotional content and energy but since I'm a musician those things alone don't usually grab my interest. That's not why I listen to music.

wonder years - same, inoffensive and pleasant and im not saying that to be stubborn it's just the way
i feel about it
|
| |
the wonder years aren't accessible at all lol

like something along the lines of Another Girl Another Planet is so far beyond this sort of stuff because its got charm. I spose thats power pop but not too far removed from pop-punk.
