Yeah, shoegaze is about a certain sound, not necessarily the production techniques used to attain it. Essentially a 'soft' mood or tone created (perhaps paradoxically) by heaviness. Wall of sound and layering is one way to get that but this album still hits a similar sound with more minimalistic guitar tones.
As for vocals, all the original shoegaze is centered a lot on vocals... as long as they're dreamy/floaty/blending in with the music (as they are for the most part on here), they don't take anything away from the shoegaze sounds.
softness-through-heaviness, floaty vocals, and the general alt rock sensibility on this thing makes it feel shoegazey. most of the song structure are definitely post-rock-esque but there's a significant shoegaze aesthetic as well

album gets better every listen, might bump up to a 4.5. still hear almost zero post rock in this album. don't even know what post rock song structures means in this context because these songs have very traditional rock structures for the most part with touches of prog in the tempo changes.
btw, should mention that black metal is much more of an idealogy than a sound. if the music is not about dark "evil" subject matter, then it is not black metal.

Yeah what Noctus has quoted up there is a pretty fucking stupid thing to say.
|

Yeah. Neige definitely wouldn't approve that sentiment. But then again he has said that he despises intellectual music.

neige doesn't make black metal music, he makes the opposite of black metal. his music is like a warm blanket, calm and peaceful. for pleasant picnics on a summer afternoon.

DarkNoctus, you need to realize that music isn't just defined by the technical aspects. tremolo riffs, blast beats, these are just techniques. they aren't defining elements of the black metal subgenre. black metal is a state of mind, a way of life, a particular viewpoint.
it's the exact same thing as punk. punk isn't a musical style, it's a lifestyle and a state of mind. when people call pop bands like blink 182 punk, it's insulting. they are the OPPOSITE of punk. they are the polar opposite, crass commercialism and acceptance of the status quo. punk is about spitting in the face of authority. it doesn't matter what you sound like, it matters what your attitude and thematic content is.
black metal is the exact same way.
