i mean petrucci has been writing most of the material for the last decade, right? he obviously is just going soft, composing stale music

who listens to written songs for the song writing?

for me songwriting is always connected to the lyrics, and they are very important for sure, just not really in this particular genre which bases itself on technicality, catchy melodies and long-winded structures

in general, your typical dt fan doesn't care if the song is well-written but focuses on the technical aspects and catchy riffs instead

good technical aspects, catchy riffs, etc. is all part of songwriting.....not just lyrics

for me it has always been the lyrics and how they're matched with the music but maybe i've used the term incorrectly

"for me songwriting is always connected to the lyrics"

would that mean that an instrumental album doesn't have any song-writing?

It's also not really true that progressive metal in general is based on technicality and long-winded structures. It's far too diverse to be generalized in such way. Queensryche, Crimson Glory, parts of Fates Warning etc aren't long-winded at all. I won't complain about the catchy melodies though, that's part of it in most cases I guess.

Edit: Just read the comment above and yeah, song-writing is often used as a synonym for composition. Now I fully understand why you'd say that Portnoy is a bad song-writer.

its less to do with lyrics and more to do with lack of melody

technicality for the sake of technicality, no emotion
