I'll check this out eventually but to me the band peaked with 6 degrees.

i thought this was really boring.

at least it's kind of a revert to their 90's stuff, if only the songs weren't bland, bland, bland.

I don't really understand why they refused Thomas Lang but accepted Mike Mangini. They're both skilled but there's really a lack of musicality imo. Well at least Mangini can keep up the tempo..

This album reminds me most of Ocatavarium: little diversity in song structures, pretty boring downtuned guitar riffs, and very little feeling in any of the songs. Album is relatively enjoyable, but I was hoping the band would take another step forward after BC&SL, not two steps back.

RIP

Couldn't have said this better myself. Excellent review Trey!

I admit, I've always enjoyed Portnoy's input to the band, yes that includes his "terrible" vocals, I didn't mind the growling section in A Nightmare To Remember. Great review, I absolutely agree with pretty much every point, the overabundance of ballads and the slightly bland drum sections. No doubt Mangini is a great addition to DT, he didn't write the drum parts so I don't blame him.

Jom and Treybombs ftw

Theres a lot of boring verse/passages in this too as well as areas that are awkward and have me awaiting the next chorus.

"but just like in the band’s early days, they actually compliment the songs"
Should be complement I think

There is a substantial controversy in your review Trey.

You can't say that the band and record is great (rating and review-wise - in half of the review, at least) and then say that the drummer is bland.

In rock, if the drummer is bland, the whole band is bland.

The drums' blandness just infects everything, this is a doctrine in rock/metal.

James Labrie has been allowed to display his entire range

I thoroughly disagree, Labrie is plain bland in here, along with Mangini.
