It comes down to whether or not the songs move you. I've listened to this album and cried almost the whole way through, pounded into the ground by the tremendous force and tragedy which pervade these haunting tracks. However, I completely understand why people hate it. If you are not sentimental, nostalgiac, or a hopeless romantic, odds are you will not understand why so many others consider this record a masterpiece. Not despite the rough, intimate production, but BECAUSE of it. Jeff recorded most of the album in a bathroom in a run-down house in Athens, Georgia. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is sort of like For Emma, Forever Ago in this regard; both are albums that invite their listeners into the unique, odd, and devestatingly vulnerable worlds that their creators conjur.
