How can you back up your reasoning that Sputnik's rating system should be based upon the system teachers use to mark students' work? I don't think you get it.

If you think that Sputnik's rating system is the same as an academic grade scale you should prepare yourself for a life of failure and poverty.

I'm not saying that it should be necessarily. I'm just saying that when I see a 3.5 score I, PERSONALLY, feel that it means the album is mediocre.
I gave a reason for my opinion, not a reason for why sputnik should operate this way... jezzus.

I just don't know why you think a 3.5 is mediocre!
school and music are 2 completely different things, in school you are expected to be excellent in order to pursue a certain career, therefore a 70% is mediocre.
But music is different, it is subjective and the "quality" of the music is determined by certain factors.
For example, when I'm in a bad mood I listen to stuff like Alice in Chains or My dying Bride, but when I'm in a good mood and want to have a good laugh I listen to stuff like creed, brokencyde and waking the cadaver.
What I'm trying to say is that music serves different purposes and we shouldn't expect it to be excellent all the time.

I thunk you're missing the point that whoever designs the ratings system sets the scale. A 2.5 is average because it's perfectly in the middle between awful and classic in quality. If you set average in the middle, there's no bias towards higher ratings (such as if average was a 3.5) and you also have more room for higher ratings. It has nothing to do with the fact it's music. It has everything to do with the fact mx made a rating system with a certain scale.

Yeah I get that.
I was just trying to voice the reason why I felt that the written score didn't match with the rating, based on my thoughts of what a 3.5 is.
I'm sorry if I ticked people off I was just presenting a different way of looking at ratings.

You know what class I did pass? Cyber-policing. You're under arrest.

The problem with 2.5 being the average is that normally one checks out albums he thinks he's going to
like. So in that context a 3.5 isn't all that 'great'. For example, giving a 3.5 to the new album by
your favourite band would probably constitute a disappointment. So it's difficult, and for the rating
system to work perfectly you would effectively need to randomly choose which albums to listen to.
