Re: Knott
I think it's easy to get cynical about the theme and artistic merit of an album like this, especially when people use such hyperbole in reacting to it. But to me it's pretty damn refreshing to see a band put themselves out there and create something that has multiple layers.

Pretty good review though I just went back to Travels and Lost Ground listened to both of them again, then listened to this again, and man I gotta say this is my favourite defeater release yet.

Saying the theme is overdone is pretty lame. Every theme ever is overdone. I can't think of an album that has gone to such lengths to hash this out, especially from two perspectives. People need to take a step back and think about this album in the context of all the other dreg released with lyrics about cities on fire and other pedestrian shit.

While I agree with some points, I think the risk is rating it with a partiality toward reception, instead of merit. Compared to most current releases, as well as other newer albums in this genre, this clearly deserves higher than a 3.5. Not to mention the band is putting forth an artistic effort in regards to theme that most bands could give a shit about, and I think that's worth something, even if you think it's banal.
you think because theyre basing their shit around a storyline they automatically deserve brownie points over other bands who "dont give a shit"? that may be the dumbest shit anyone has said in the last hour this shit gets used all the time

I finally listened to one of the songs, Empty Glass. It was really good, yeah... But not quite a 5, I'm thinking this'll be a 4 max for me. Besides, there's only so much post-hardcore I can listen to before I need to listen to some Mogwai or something.

I could care less about the rating. I can see it dropping to a 4 for me, and to be honest, the whole storyline thing actually wears on me after a while and diminishes repeated listenings; but I do think people should give them a little more credit for being creative.

No, you guys misunderstand me. I think it's clever. I think the story is awesome. I just find it hilarious how everyone is like omg what an amazing thing to see a hardcore band doing something creative like that.

Decent review... although a little too short and not enough detail about the album. But well written for sure. I disagree though, obviously. haha But yeah. Album is so good.

good god... where to begin with this one. ok, redsky DID review this on merit, and even slightly in the context of modern hardcore and more specifically the band's own discography. but mainly he focused on its merits as far as originality, impact and enjoyment. seems like it's YOU who is basing the argument around reception, as in "how could he give a 3.5 rating to an album that SO MANY PEOPLE gave high marks to -- and then you go on to compare it to other acts in the hardcore genre without really mentioning much of how it stands on its own as a piece of music.
So you think this deserves higher than a 3.5 just because it's better than some other shitty albums? how is that basing anything on merit?

also how is it creative when this is like the 3rd album they've done that tells a story? and don't tell me it's because they added an acoustic disc, because even the Foo Fighters have pulled that trick before.

Another reason I appreciate the storyline is because it gives the overdone working poor themes in Hardcore songs more context. Even if the lyrics are intelligent hearing about quarries and steel mines and shit in Hardcore songs, without some supporting material, is tiring as fuck.

Acoustic part isn't that good.
Re: Inveigh
Merit was probably the wrong word. I am not some big defender of this album, and don't care about the rating, just felt people were getting a tad cynical about theme, but that's one man's opinion. Moving along.

did I miss the part where people were cynical about the theme? it's cool and all, but it's not like it's some revolutionary idea that's never been attempted before... I mean, Defeater's already done it a couple times.
don't get me wrong, I think this album's awesome and all, but let's not pretend they've reinvented the genre or anything.
