Every REM up to monster has a case to be made for it as the band's peak imo, though green and out of time are a bit more on the hits-plus-jank side

Reckoning is the one I could never really get into from their early days

'Every REM up to monster has a case to be made for it as the band's peak imo, though green and out of time are a bit more on the hits-plus-jank side'
For me I can't see it, 'Murmur' has 'Radio Free', 'Pilgrimage', 'Laughing', 'Perfect Circle', 'Talk About the Passion' and 'Sitting Still'...think that just monsters (no pun intended) the competition in the early days.
I'd say 'Document' is being under appreciated in this thread maybe - that seems the closest to being another classic with 'One I Love', 'End of the World', 'Worksong', 'Occupation' (one of their best), 'Disturbance' and the underrated (maybe?) 'King of Birds'

I love that this album sounds like REM going 4AD

document is solid but it ranks pretty low for me. theres even records post berry id take over it. the opening four and last two songs are great but theyre all i really come back to
automatic and pageant are the 5s for me but this is super close to one. reckoning and murmur are just a hair short of that tier for me but i still love tf out of them and they show how insanely creative this band was even with the fewest ingredients

'the opening four and last two songs are great but theyre all i really come back to'
that is pretty darn contrarian to remove 'The One I Love and 'End of the World' from the 'best stuff' on 'Document'

5. Reckoning [3.5]
6. Fables [3.5]
7. Adventures [3.5]
8. Green [3.5] (need to listen to it more)

10. Monster [3] (need to listen to it more)
11. Up [3]
12. Reveal [2.5]
13. Collapse [2.5]
14. Accelerate [2.5]

Re: the big singles on Document, I do find that end of the world sounds a little thin and basic after a decade of listens, not bad by any means but I'd definitely put it in the lower half of a track ranking
The one I love on the other hand hot DAMN what a rocker, "a simple prop to occupy my time" is such an unbelievably savage burn

i actually like the one i love less out of the two lol it feels like rem by the numbers to me and stipes one note chorus is kinda boring imo. there j isnt anything that really perks my ear but it happens at least they have like 100 other songs that do lmao
|
| |
I mean it's rem by numbers in that they basically did the same song again on the next album and called it Orange Crush lmfao

and thats why orange crush is one of my least fav rem songs lol that one i cant dig

End of the World feels close to a novelty song in their discog
But also it would be one of the best novelty songs ever in indiedom
Been listening to the band so long some songs I got bored of I’ve gone full circle back around to I guess

In terms of the big Document singles I've never really liked It's the End of the World much tbh.
The One I Love on the other hand is a top 5 R.E.M. track, great song.

The big exclusions of 'Losing My Religion', 'Radio Free Europe', 'Nightswimming' and 'The One I Love' would make a top 20
'Everybody Hurts' and 'End of the World' a top 30
I think 'Nightswimming' and 'Everybody Hurts' are the ones that have dropped the most for me over time, 'Nightswimming' in particular used to be top three back in the day for me - says a lot about 'Automatic' that other songs have taken their place.
