The remaster owns the original, coming from someone who had the original first for years and usually HATES the idea of remastera

trent reznor has become a regular sellout but this is an excellent remaster and will always remain a classic

LOL what?
This is literally his most commercial album with the most studio interference.

no? a google search disproves that. this is him at his most intimate and immature - the original PHM was comprised of demos he made in his spare time that he sent to record labels. he ended up hitting it big and making the album with his idols (Flood, Keith LeBlanc, Adrian Sherwood, John Fryer). fully a labor of love. are you joking or? lol

He was trying to become the next Clash, and only recently has said some good things about that era.
Label wanted him to make another PHM with singles similar to it. He made Broken in secret, and didn't release it until his contract was terminated (which he wanted).
Broken, TDS, and The Fragile came after and aren't even close to sellouts.
Everything else after was after he became sober, which he said made his life much happier. With Teeth might be the closest to selling out, but then he made Year Zero, The Slip and Ghosts I-IV that aren't even close.

And the trilogy with Atticus as the other primary songwriter is definitely different.
I don't see anything that's a sellout. You not liking it as much as PHM is reasonable, but sellout? Nah

ah i hear you. his work for films is specifically what im referring to. i know people tend to like his soundtrack work but to me it screams "i am only doing this for the paycheck". his work as NiN has remained tight and i respect that.
i still dont think PHM is commercial even if it ushered in a more commercial influence on em. it's pretty clear listening to this as many times as one does that it's very honest and comes from a lot of internal turmoil. the sound is very unique still and has aged super well. to be clear i dont think any of the records he made following this are anything but great. just dont like em as much

I like his soundtracks but I just look at them differently. He’s mentioned how it’s another (and completely different) outlet for creativity. And if they are just for a paycheck, I mean hey. My job is solely for the paycheck at this point.
I think lyrically PHM is very internal. Musically, it sounds like an edgier, industrial take on Depeche Mode for me (and Depeche Mode are hands down a better Depeche Mode). I personally enjoy The Fragile the most with TDS second, but it’s cool to see other takes since mine is the general consensus.
What are your favorite tracks on here? What makes it your favorite?

Also makes much more sense that you’re talking about his soundtracks. My brain was hurting beforehand haha.

The old live variant from the PHM touring days with the Now I'm Nothing intro is fucking untouchable
IIGGHHHHH GOD DAMN IT
YOU FUCKING PROMISED ME

But his soundtracks are great, I'd even say they feel more inspired than some of his post The Fragile albums

garth yea thats understandable lmao. should have clarified - was salty at the time at how shit the Soul soundtrack was. it needed a real jazz ost. frustrated at rez for taking that one and injecting it with copypaste iphone app commercial music
honestly this has always been one of those albums that just hits the right spot for me in a way i can't fully understand. favorite tracks are too many to count. adore the sounds and honest aggression of this record and do love how sonically it's closer to depeche mode than a lot of the metal acts of the time. love the way the emotions are raw and unfiltered and create a true-to-life soundscape of what it feels to live them
