I've found that caffeine helps my reviews come easier.

if a bit convoluted in the opening paragraph again...

Hahaha is it? I'll re-read it again and see if there's anything I can clean up. Thanks for saying so, because in my mind it all makes sense.

I'm really interested to see Tyler's take on it too, I'm not sure what he thinks about this band so it's a mystery to me. As for people saying a 2.5 is too low, if it's any consolation I'm keeping my personal rating at a 3, because the album lies somewhere in between.

I think I like this album for all the wrong reasons

What do you mean?

Oh, this album is by far the worst thing they've done to date but for some reason, I find myself repeating some of the awesome parts in my head all day long.

i agree but tbh I think this might be better than ashes, but only because I don't much like Our Fortress Is Burning. i enjoy this whole album rather than switching it off before it hits the end, which is why I think it's a more cohesive effort.

I also like the more earthy sound of this album as opposed to ashes.

but yeah this definitely isn't The Mantle. review can't really be faulted tbh, it's great.

oh and

Give this a month and I think a few people will turn their head as I have towards this album.

i agree with this. I don't think it'll turn out to be their best, but it will still turn out to be a compelling listen to a lot of people who think at the moment that it's incredibly underwhelming.

i never expected them to top their previous albums, and they didn't - but it's still one hell of a listen and I'm more than satisfied with it.

nnnn our fortress is burning is boring as hell imo and that is meant to be the centrepiece of the album

rest of the album is some of the best shit they've ever done, though

if you like everything else agalloch has done then there is really no reason not to like the ofib trilogy (except maybe number 3). That and the second one has the climax of the whole album on it

ALL OF OUR SHADOWS

ARE ASHES...AGAINST...THEEEE....GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN *epic guitars*

i know and it even confuses me how I just don't seem to get it.

part 2 is a good song but it isn't anywhere near the best moment of the album for me so it was like a massive lead up to nothing.

No offense Crysis, but as i listen to this album, and read your review, it seems to me that you, and a few others actually, had a preformed idea of what this album should sound like, and when it didn't fit, sort of wrote it off as average.

I agree with your statement that this sounds nothing like their previous efforts, which is such a good thing. If i wanted to hear The Mantle, i'll go listen to The Mantle. This has such a unique atmosphere, i really think if you re-listen to this with all expectations gone you'll get it.

Then again i might just be blowing smoke because i genuinely like this album, so you never know.

I completely disagree with Kyle Ward's review and all the clones that follow him. This is an incredible album and, at least for Agalloch, one of the most incredible albums in years.

I actually had no idea what this album was going to sound like, and didn't expect it to sound like anything, simply because I knew Agalloch were going to change their sound once again, like they always do. Hard for me to disagree with my vision of the album when I didn't even have a vision going into it. I had expectations, but not an idea of what it "should" sound like.

I could easily say the same about those who like the album, that they went into it with massive expectations and their desperation to enjoy the album makes them overlook the numerous and crippling faults here.

I completely disagree with Kyle Ward's review and all the clones that follow him.

I'm in the minority here so there will likely be very few, if any, clones of my opinion. Thanks for the neg, always nice to meet a fan.

The review was well written of course, but when I picture an album being rated a 2.5 I picture some pretty crappy stuff, to have this album there seems extremely harsh.

The rating is more based on the description of "average" than its 50% numerical value.
