Agreed about string arrangements, I'm not usually a fan of strings or orchestration in (singer-songwriter) folk music but there are some notable exceptions where they really do work well, Avalanche being one such case.
Some of the best use of strings I've heard in a folk song would have to be in Jethro Tull's Moths. David Palmer's arrangements in that song (and in most of the Tull songs he contributed to) are brilliant.

Second best Cohen after the debut. Avalanche is stunning, as is Joan of Arc.

Have to admit I'm behind on Cohen, only got the double disc best of and a few random downloaded tracks (Avalanche is one) - which of his albums are still essential buys based on the fact I already have the 'best of' picks?

While the debut has some incredibly strong songs as well, Avalanche, Last Year's Man, Dress Rehearsal Rag, Joan of Arc and Famous Blue Raincoat are all undoubtedly among his ultimate greatest ones, both lyrically and musically.

Definitely. In fact, I think my personal preference of this over his debut simply depends on the raw emotional impact so many of these songs engender

ya, i think i might prefer his first album (only 2 i've heard) but this really has its amazing moments. i'm usually not one to pay much attention to lyrics but i think that they really emotionalize the whole album in both cases. I still need to give both more listens tho hehe

Does anyone else find Joan of Arc as calming as I do? seems the general consensus is that this is solidly depressing from start to finish but I honestly find the way Joan of Arc finds celebration in tragedy uplifting and totally beautiful - fits the album title I suppose

I don't find Joan of Arc to be depressing, or at least much less so than songs like Avalanche, Famous Blue Raincoat and Last Year's Man. In fact, I think you're right, Joan of Arc is mostly about renouncing to the sadness of death, and finding beauty in such tragedy.
It's often overlooked among his texts, sadly, but its structure and poignancy are remarkable
