I hate McDonalds - I hate just about all fast food actually. I mean their burgers are like greasy hockey pucks and their fries are just solidified grease.

Holy fuck. People are seriously calling this boring? You need to get over the fact that Kayo Dot isn't going to make another Choirs Of The Eye. This album is fucking brilliant - the ending of Calonyction Girl is probably my favorite part of music in 2010. You guys have to be over reacting on Toby's vocals. Then again, I didn't really expect anyone to understand the album.

obviously anyone who hates this doesn't understand the album there is no other explanation

He's right, only he can understand the album. Driver wrote the album just for him. "Coyote" is his pet name.

I don't think of any of their albums as best or worst. They're not comparable to me. If you don't like this, then you don't. There's no point in trying to. It's definitely not something you're going to put on all the time to listen to. Live, it's completely amazing. I saw them preform it in it's entirety last weekend. I was in complete awe. They preformed it flawlessly.

I actually listen to this about two to three times a week.
|

they get worse with each album imo

Thanks silentpotato.
I think a more accurate statement would be that they change with each album. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean they're getting worse.

Holy shit. I did pretty much a complete 180 with this album. Back in April when I first heard this I was definitely unimpressed.. I was left unmoved by most of the album and gave it a 3 based on the compositional skill. I just started listening to it again at the beginning of last week in anticipation for Stained Glass and I've jumped from a 3 to a 4.5 after about 10 listens.
I can't even believe that I didn't like this a few months ago. I don't think I gave it a chance looking back.. the music is so obtuse and so unlike anything I've ever experienced that it seemed to just hit me and bounce right off. I totally didn't understand it at all- it was basically entirely foreign to me. But after really concentrating and giving it a chance, I get chills now when I hear it. The emotional weight of everything is just ridiculous and Toby once again proves that he is an amazing composer the way he crafts each song and builds them to their eventual climaxes. The album as a whole hits so many emotional cues and many of them are due directly to the compositional arrangement and the flow within and between each song.
The difference between this and Choirs is that all of the emotional climaxes in Choirs basically scream "THIS IS A CLIMAX." The emotional dynamics of that album are made up directly by the musical dynamics and the timbre. This album is sooo much more subtle. All of the emotions are there, but they come more from the arrangements and progression than huge dynamic shifts. It really takes a lot of focused listening to catch the subtleties.. like minor shifts in rhythm of the bass line or slight variations in the horns/violin. I think that if more people gave this the focus it deserves they would be able to see that.. I know I definitely didn't when I first heard it and I really had no interest in listening to it more. Thank god I did. This really deserves so much more praise than its getting.
