My main gripe with the record is that it relies too much on verse-chorus-verse songwriting, which isn't a bad thing. Problem is, the hooks just don't grab me like "Pachuca Sunrise", "Knights", or "Drilling" did, and as a result the pop structure falters. They try to go both the poppy and proggy route and ended up kinda lukewarm in execution. With that said, I do love a few tracks on this already, especially "Fooled By The Night" because it's a pretty blatant Peter Gabriel homage (just listen to Snyder's singing), whereas "Summer Angel" and "Secret Country" just straight-up bring teh rock.

I hate everyone that says it's stupid to rate or compare a band's discography. How is it redundant? It's important to look at an album in its context and see how a band developes.

I'm on listen 5 and so far it has still held up. Maybe not as solid as I hoped for, but it is excellent.
Listening to The Thief with headphones on sets me in a very good mood.

A lot of the proggy elements from Planet of Ice are replaced with less successful poppy ones. So yeah, I personally don't think it's nearly as good.

POI owns this no contest. Despite that, still a good record.
