Revisiting this cuz Watermelon Man rules and so far Chameleon grew

my order of getting into herbie hancock is from the movie blow-up, then all his 60s blue note releases, then head hunters.
his psychedelic jazz records used to be quite tough for me. years later they suddenly got unbelievably charming.
revisited head hunters again today. surprisingly, I think my favorite is Sextant now.

If I really only care about Herbie for his funky stuff, what album of his should I check next?
|

Live record Flood is what you need.
Probably Thrust or Fat Albert Rotunda after that

Chameleon is such a damn jam!
|
| |
I used to jam on that on the keyboard for so long in high school band. never ending
|
| |
if I play the chameleon bass line and someone doesn’t know what it’s from we can’t be friends.

album is a blast and a half but I'll always prefer Herbie circa Maiden Voyage and Empyrean Isles style.

Upon first listens I am a bit underwhelmed. It sounds less imminent, vehement and urgent than anything Miles Davis has done in his electric phase (just comapring as the reviewer stated that this was giving Miles Davis a run for his money). But maybe I need some more spins to fully appreciate...
