Amazing album. As Shadowsfallen stated, it can get boring in some places, but it's nothing too terrible for me to quit listening to a song.
Lyrically, I didn't find this album as amazing as, say, Blackwater Park or My arms, your hearse. Some songs are damn straight amazing (The grand conjuration with satan and all is amazing), so is Beneath the mire (my favorite track from the album) or The baying of the hounds, however, the softer moments, which are usually the ones with less complex lyrics, are way to simplistic for my taste.
Musically I didn't find it any different. It's Opeth. It's a great album, although there are some detractors, but I still play it every night to go to sleep.

Listening to the album, and observing the majority of the comments, this is a superb album that is still flawed. How it ranks on Opeth's ladder is different for everyone, but it's fair to say that this album is an amazing display of musicianship and originality. I applaud it to the very echo, that should applaud again. :macbeth:

The Grand Conjuration is incredible. I can't get enough of that song.

I picked this up again last night for the first time in a while. I really love this. I think Mike's voice makes this 10000x more special then it would be otherswise, because that guy is a damn fine vocalist.

I don't know, ShadowsFallen. He creates good vocal melodies, but it's pretty obvious at times that he has a weak clean voice. Not a bad one, just a weak one. It can work at times, but in places like that exposed section of Hours Of Wealth, you can see how flawed it is. I think the best thing about the band is Peter Lindgren, without a doubt, but I know that Opeth is a collective effort.

I rather like Mikael's clean voice, but his growls are probably the best I've ever heard. They're just soooo evil.

Weak clean vocals? Not at all! His singing voice sounds almost perfect on this album. Sure he has flaws, but everyone does. I didn't think it was weak at all.

How can you say that this album has any boring moments. Wow, I must say its people like you that totally look too deeply into music and try to find something negative with everything. This is one of the greatest and most important releases in Metal and the whole music community. Any musician will tell you this. As music continues to clone bands with no talent or originality, its reasuring that Opeth will always produce well thought out, quality music that has no repetition. Otherwise, ok review but I found no cons with this album. Truly worthy of album of the year!

Maybe. But by Opeth standards I'd say it's sub-par.

I can understand what you mean by weak clean vocals. They are very good, but don't have much power or dynamics to them. He can't sing very loud or belt it out.

Mikael dosn't have to sing loudly or belt it out for their type of music, his growling is for that. I think his voice has an amazing quality to it, I just... simply put, adore his voice. I think it has depth.
Blackwater park has some killer riffs, and some damn fine songwriting for the mostpart. I do feel that the songwriting could have been better on a couple of songs though, to a greater extent than I do on Ghost Reveries. I think he's definately progressing as a songwriter and has better ideas to link riffs together, and have an overall mood for a song rather than linking riffs that fit together. (Probably due to being able to rehearse this album, unlike the last few)

Shadius, you are absolutely right. Mikael is one of the main reasons why I love Opeth so much. His voice can go from the insane death growls to the lovely clean vocals. And on top of that, the band creates some very enjoyable and technical riffs that I can't get enough of.

Opeth are so listenable that whatever mood i'm in i can relate to their songs. They are the best band to fall asleep to, the only hard thing is to choose which album of theirs to listen to as they are all very special. This Message Edited On 12.30.05

I've bought this album a few days ago after hearing a long of good things about them.. Mind you that find any Slayer's CD in Indonesia is almost impossible, so when i saw Ghost Reveries for like 14 bucks, i just bought it... And now, i love it.. Just absolutely brilliant... If i wanna buy another album from them, which one would you guys recommend?

The first two albums have some great guitar riffs. They are very guitar-oriented albums. There is virtually no bass sound. There is a bass guitar, but it's not bassy at all, if that makes sense. The drumming is pretty sucky, too. On Morningrise, all the songs are just long collections of good riffs placed one after another. Mikael's vocals were way higher too, they didn't fit. The guitars have a very twangy, thin sound that doesn't appeal to me.
