Good album... I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. To me it's more impressive than it is enjoyable.
Isn't it a bit harsh to say the singer sucks, though? I don't think he sings badly at all... I'm not sure I think his voice suits the music, though...This Message Edited On 12.13.05

DT's best all right! How good is Mike Portnoy WHOA, he makes DT, if it wasnt for him theyd be lost. Good review aswell, good detail.

The first DT album that got me hooked on them. 5/5

The vocals and piano on this album are extremely reminiscent of those on Pink Floyd's The Final Cut. In fact, this album sounds musically like a modern version of that one, with similar story depth.
Helpful review, gets a pos vote from me. Pretty good album. I don't listen to Dream Theater for emotion, but I really like the sheer power they have.

Good review bud, and i agree with you on all counts. My favourite song would be "Beyond This Life", classic.

Nah Home owns Beyond This Life, and every other DT song that isn't 20+ minutes long.

Wow...just...wow. Listened to this for the first time tonight and i was absolutely blown away. I had heard Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos and really didn't know why this band is considered so great. Now i know. Start to finish this album floored me.
What happened to them that they made such a brilliant album as this and such **** as ToT and SC? This is definately a keeper.

I think Systematic Chaos and Train Of Thought are both fantastic albums. Not quite as good as this obviously, but pretty damn good.

My problem is that with this album the solos have emotion, the songs fit well and feal like there's some passion, the vocals are good and not trying to copy wut's popular at the time (i think), and the lyrics don't feel like they could have been written by a six-year old.
On their two most recent the solos just felt like they were thrown in without reason and the songs are long and boring. Some songs are good but as a whole the albums don't keep my interest. This album is crisp, great, and (for the first time with Dream Theater, make me want to listen to every song and not put on something else and just skip to the highlights.

Yeah will, they have some incredible stuff out. SC is probably my least favorite by them besides their debut. But they definitely have some stuff you should check out besides ToT (which is one of my favorites by them, I guess because of the aggressiveness and the sick solos by Petrucci).
but look into Images and Words and Octavarium and pretty much all of their other stuff willfell. the only real album by them that you can skip is When Dream and Day Unite.

Fatal tragedy is amazing, but the rest of the album is kinda hard to listen to. Still a solid 3.5 though.

Perfection. Can't get any better, one of my favourite albums.

This is a great listen, but I just can't get as revved up about this album as others can. These guys can annihilate their instruments though which is cool especially the keyboarder.

john petrucci is wasted on the shit singer he makes it sound like queen or something and i really hate queen. i mean the instrumental bit's and guitar solos are amazing but when the singers singing it makes it sound like some crappy 70s pop or something.

The vocalist used to really fit the band's style, but he just sounds more and more out of place on the more recent albums. I don't really have a problem with him, though.
