It's not as good as Deserter's but it's very good and very different
Boney, I'd predict you'd prefer 'Deserters' to this overall.
You might also prefer 'All is Dream' to both :/

It's a lot better than Deserters

naw, Deserter's just has that unified feel, that bit of magic
three of these tunes and 'Car Wash Hair' (sort of a bonus track) are legendary though

Deserter's is one of the very few albums where I heard a friend make a convincing case that it is Not Good and now I can't help but think of it a little bit that way. used to love it. also there's a jools holland performance of "holes" that might make you hate it, it sure didn't help for me

I've listened to more live Mercury Rev albums than from any other band - I've heard the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to the Rev
Jools Holland performance sounds alright, nice bass, a few shaky parts
Also saw them live at the Reading Festival lying on the ground outside the tent just staring into the night sky - heard 'Holes' but also 'Tides of the Moon' for the first time and that is one of my favourite 'fresh' songs I've ever heard live. That was incredible, lead guitar is so good on that tune, esp live.

I will admit if you are trying to have 'good taste tm' - then 'Deserter's Songs' and everything after are sort of off the menu. They are not cool, close to a guilty pleasure band.
Also for non muso types this album is prob goofy and unlistenable too, Baker's vocals alone must be a massive turn off for non music nerds.
I love them though, top 20 band for me mos def

I like the story of them being booted from Lollapalooza '94 for being too loud as a second stage band

Yeah, early years they revelled in annoying people
Think a lot of critics shat on them
They've got spirit, of all the current bands I tend to think Deerhunter have a certain kinship with them any they're another really loud guitar band - and Bradford Cox has his rebellious moments too
|
| |
hah that's funny it's sort of a generational thing maybe, deerhunter are totally my Mercury Rev in the regard to which you refer
I've seen deerhunter maybe 6x which is a lot for me (probably for most too, although my parents have seen U2...25? 30? times) and i've seen them in good times and I've seen them in bad times but boy are they loud most of the time
uh anyways!

Finally diving into this.

The intro is probably (?(?) my favourite song of all time. If I had to narrow it down to one. Which I don't!

Wow, it's a great song for sure. This is mostly great though I'm not huge on "Blue and Black" or "Very Sleepy Rivers" so far. Also kind of annoying that the version on Spotify has "Car Wash Hair" as a hidden track tacked onto the already very long "Very Sleepy Rivers".

Was a bit unsure about this on first few spins but I am loving it now. What a beautiful trip.

"Blue and Black" and "Very Sleepy Rivers" are easily the only weakpoints
Good opinion
You made sure to hear the version with Car Wash Hair right? Sometimes that one's missing and it's great
I think on Spotify, it's hidden at the end of Very Sleepy Rivers as one track, which is a shame

B&B has actually grown on me quite a lot since that message! VSR too but not to quite as great an extent - I think that could have easily been trimmed by like 5 minutes.
Yeah Car Wash might be my favorite here tbh, like I said before it's annoying that it's tacked onto the end of VSR (though there are other versions of it on its own on Spotify, just not on this album).
