I was seriously addicted to Soldier of Fortune some 20 years ago but I have to say I prefer When a Blind Man Cries or even the seriously underrated Lalena, as far as DP ballads are concerned. Still an excellent song though.

Love the title track, Highball Shooter is ok. I find the rest of it average.

I must admit, it's been a loooong time since I played the album. This was, I think, a big let down after the superb Burn. Stormbringer is one of those albums I can't take to. Especially when I don't like the direction Hughes & Coverdale are taking the band in.

Here we go again. The only classic is "Stormbringer", while "Soldier Of Fortune" is a solidly-written but ultra-sappy ballad.

The rest, however? There are riffs here, of course. At least, theoretically. But they are all so ordinary, so generic; "Lady Double Dealer" has a great riff? Please. "You Can't Do It Right"? "Highball Shooter"? "The Gypsy"? "Love Don't Mean A Thing". Half-assed and uninspired are the words I'm looking for. And these are all the riffs of the album!

The vocal melodies are, again, banal and cliched to the limit (same "generic blues verse/passably catchy but stupid chorus" formula), but even less interesting than on Burn.

The songs in general, now, are mostly mid-tempo rockers or ballads with some funk thrown here and there and the group sound completely out of its comfort zone. "Holy Man" is your typical mellow ballad, "Hold On" an average piece of boogie, "You Can't Do It Right" is another funk nightmare,...and you get the drift.

In short, everything's stale, uninspired, averagely written and most importantly, low-brow and dumb for Purple's standards.

Damn, still need to listen to this. Just saw Akerfeldt listed it in his top 10 albums list for Rolling Stone.
