The first half of this is excellent, and the last three songs are great too. There's just a lot of conflicting musical styles on here because the band were sort of trying to be experimental, which is a noble effort for one of the biggest bands in the world to do, but only really went all the way with it on a few songs.

tbh Get On Your Boots and Stand Up Comedy are the only subpar songs on this, and I still don't find them much worse than anything else the band's done in the 2000s.

first 3 songs and Cedars in particular are beautiful

I agree Talons, first half is excellent. The middle section after Unknown Caller is what kills it for me, and while the latter end of the album picks up in quality, I just find the momentum has been lost.

I can understand that. I'm relistening now and liking it more and more, the first four songs are amazing.

Album cover loses ten points for showing a clear line on the horizon.

Their song Winter really should've been on here in the middle, maybe replacing some of the rockier songs. It's amazing and fits perfectly with the beginning and ending of this.

get on your boots fucking blows. white as snow is pretty bad too. wish there were other b sides like winter i could swap songs on here out with. i suppose you could add mercy since they put it on an ep promoting this album

I'm pretty sure Mercy is from the Atomic Bomb sessions, and White as Snow is a good song. Cedars of Lebanon is amazing, that and Miracle Drug are their best songs since ATYCLB.

mercy is from the atom bomb sessions but iirc they were considering putting it on this. either way it would work pretty well on here

"Cedars and Miracle Drug are their best songs since ATYCLB."

I'd throw in Sometimes, City of Blinding Lights, and Moment of Surrender with them but yeah, fair bunch right there

And while we're at it, let's toss Vertigo in there as well, shall we?

unknown caller is probably my favorite song on this. the first minute and a half or so of the song is gorgeous

first 5 songs on Atomic Bomb are the best run they've had since ATYCLB while we're at it

Atomic Bomb could have been even better tho, like these days I prefer the alternate versions of Vertigo (Native Son), Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own, and All Because of You to the originals. Are You Gonna Wait Forever? and Smile should've been on it too, and Mercy would've been an amazing closer.

Unknown Caller, Magnificent, and Moment of Surrender are amazing. The first four songs on here is tied with ATYCLB for best beginning to an album of theirs since Achtung Baby.

first side of Zooropa is marred by Babyface and Numb

the question of "best opening run on a U2 album?" obviously comes down to War and The Joshua Tree, nothing else comes close

I mean, I'd personally throw ATYCLB in there too, but I have massive nostalgia for it so disregard that

What no lol, Zooropa is their most inconsistent LP (not including R&H). T/t and Lemon are great tho.

babyface and numb are the worst of the first half but i still enjoy them a lot. really the only song i dont like on the album is some days are better than others

Its embarrasing that we treat this band like a serious musical act and not the "Greatest Hits" fodder they obviously are
