Although the overall tone is mellow, I really dig diversity on this, like the funky shit halfway through. One of the highest 3.5 I've given to an album I think.

So, i just listened to this yesterday.... i think i'll just copy/paste this comment that i left about that Amia Venera Landscape album, because it perfectly applies to this as well:
material-wise, this is definitely worthy of a 4, but unfortunately i don't see myself coming back to listen to this much.
Although, as it stands, this is probably the most interesting thing i've ever heard from Devy... even if it is basically a Tool ripoff.

Yeah, pretty much everything about this album screams "TOOL", right down to the album cover. Not that that's a BAD thing, i'm just sayin'....

Tool ripoff?? lol what?

Yeah, i guess i could partially take back that claim. He doesn't just rip-off Tool on this album. He rips off A LOT of far superior prog rock acts.

can you possibly mention some of those superior prog rock acts that he rips-off? because right now you just sound retarded

Tool is still the most blatant. Seriously, half of the fucking guitar melodies on here sound like they could've come from a Tool album. I also hear a lot of strong similarities to Porcupine Tree, Damnation-era Opeth, and Three on this album. Oh, and speaking of Three...

I assume Devy was listening to this song a lot while writing Gato.
That said, considering i have this at a 3.5, i clearly don't hate this. Yes, this album rips off a lot of other acts, but it does it all pretty well. If you think this album is a truly unique piece of work, though, you're fooling yourself.

you do realize that Devin has been writing music like this as long or longer than a lot of those bands you listed?

Yes, i realize that. I'm not referring to his entire career, just this specific album.

Yeah the main riff in Coast is so Adam Jones.. sigh.

then how is it a rip-off? is Devin not allowed to write an album like this because other bands "supposedly" are superior to it? if someone has been writing prog. rock//metal as a solo artist his whole career, what makes it a rip-off of other bands? you obviously have no back up to your statement

Tbh not once did I think of Tool or any of the other bands when I heard this the first time, and still not. And I'm a big fan of Tool, Opeth and PT.
This is some of Devin's best material to date. One reason is that I have never heard a sound quite like this before. The mostly mellow/clean delivery is very captivating, serene and heavy all at once.
