When this is compared to albums like 'The Angel and the Dark River' and 'Like Gods of the Sun' it is definitely superior. I personally prefer the way the violin is used here over the violin on their older albums. The albums of theirs which I don't have are 'As the Flower Withers', 'Turn Loose the Swans', '...% complete' and 'Songs of Darkness, Words of Light' so i can't compare it to them but out of the albums I have, it's the best.

I think that The Angel and the Dark River is definitely overrated, but I don't think this is better (although I like the violins on this, too). Like Gods of the Sun was their experiment in shorter songs that are more metal than doom so it's hard to compare it to this. You need to try Turn Loose the Swans.

idk why i feel like i should listen to this band

For an album that got me into the band, i have show it some appreciation. It has a lot of MDB's strengths as well, but here's the problem i have now. It isn't really that different from any of their 90's material (Bar their expeimental album released in 1997)

this one grew on me over time, it has a sombre quality that i find really lovely
|

"it has a sombre quality"
Isn't that the crux of MDB's sound? :-)

perhaps i worded it wrong - all their albums are sombre, sure but on the other albums they rely on a pretty theatric and climactic quality and it's toned down here to quite a laid back affair. makes it stand out in their discography as a unique experience, i appreciate it more now than i did before.

I'm a fan of the band, but I remember only listening to this record once or twice before deciding I prefer to spend my time with other MDB records when I'm in a MDB mood.
I should probably check this one again.

This one was slightly generic. Disappointing, especially after the beast that is Deathless Kings.
