You're missing the point though. At this point in their musical careers they have many things going on for them, you see Maynard with his wine thing. You see one of the members of CoL working on Khoma right now. Give it time and enjoy the material they have out now. I'm like you, I wish for more songs, but I honestly can listen to Salvation and Somewhere Along the Highway all my life.

Steve Von Till is a teacher and Scott Kelly works on sound systems or something like that. Yes they're professional musicians but Neurosis doesn't produce the kind of money that you can buy a house with.

because they're professional musicians? what, are they like accountants when they're not on tour? or janitors?
they're not international rock stars who can live off the money their music generates, of course they have to work. i know steves a primary school teacher, dunno bout the other guys

Best article I've found about them. Really informative and interesting read.

ok that's basically what I was getting at -- do they have other jobs to support themselves (like being a teacher or working with sound equipment) or do they have extra endeavors that they were able to do because they already make more than enough money to support themselves (like Maynard with his vineyard).
I know it's not uncommon for smaller or more underground bands to still have regular jobs (hell, the guys in Poison the Well are all bartenders, waiters, sound engineers etc.), I just view Neurosis as these metal giants and didn't consider them in that category for whatever reason. Probably because I hadn't put a ton of thought into it.

even that idiot from mastodon has (or had) a job as a builder or something lol

I think that's a bit of hyperbole, not only international rock stars make enough money off music to support themselves.
Mac Lethal still sells his albums almost exclusively at shows and through a mail order he runs from his basement, but he also independently runs his own distribution (and has been able to spin that into a record label) and he doesn't have any other jobs. And I guarantee Neurosis has sold wayyyyy more albums than him, and is much more famous.

Tool is about a million times more popular than Neurosis. I have no idea how many albums Neurosis typically sells, but the numbers pale in comparison to Tool or Mastodon.

obviously Tool is more popular than Neurosis, that wasn't my point lol
I guess I was just expressing shock that a band this big (even if they aren't THAT big) has to have full-time jobs still. When a guy like Mac Lethal (who probably hasn't sold half the albums or concert tickets Neurosis has) has been able to make music his full-time job for almost a decade.

Article was exactly where I was going to go, but yeah life of an artist is difficult (you have no fucking idea) so that's why
they need jobs. Of course if you're where Neurosis and Tool are, then you're good.

"for the record, Von Till does just as much for the songwriting as Kelly"
Is this on the earlier or newer records? I read interviews with Scott where he says he wrote most of the stuff. This was for Given to the Rising btw.
|

Oh, that same interview said they'd be entering the studio in february 2011, btw. So expect a new album about this time next year.
