for real tho this has got to be one of the most overshadowed releases by a band i'm a fan of - the closest parallel I can think of is The Cure's Seventeen Seconds with how relatively dark & ambient that was for a sophomore record. in that way though it has a pretty distinct appeal, & good lord did the songs from this sound great in the '98 Royal Albert Hall recordings

There are so many amazing tracks on this one. It's less coherent and certainly less monumental or iconic, but this isn't even close to being bad.

i'd actually say this is a little more coherent than Blue Lines, which was more of a mixed bag (in terms of sound, not quality) to me whereas this has a more discernible "album sound"

disagree this one is a bit confused on its identity imo

it's weird because i feel like the band seemed a little confused as to how to follow up Blue Lines, yet as a standalone record this is pretty "of a piece" to me

would love to hear what happened to them between this & Mezz tho - it's not every day a group goes from making pretty, chill, essentially background music to grand sinister masterpieces

I feel like they really upped their game instrumentally with this one, despite a few pointless tracks that go nowhere. They really came into their own on Mezzanine though.
