Yeah, never been a fan of Mayhem vocals.

Grand Declaration Of War makes this seem like a masterpiece in that respect though.

Overrated band, overrated album. This isn't nearly as good as people make it out to be.

Uhm... Excuse me for a moment. It feels like no one in here actually explains why they rate this album so high. I've listened to it, and really tried to focus on whatever COULD be good about it, but really... The vocalist sounds like he's vomiting while getting fucked in the ass by Lucifer. And the production is seemingly not existing. Really, i have a difficult time understanding why Dimmu Borgir is the only "black metal" band (some would say they aren't) that can produce an album worth listening to in terms of melody, production and overall quality. If these guys are trying to give us some kind of message, it can be difficult as whatever lyrics they've written with the blood from their wrists, while screaming Satan's name so loud it echoes all over the Norwegian forests, cannot be understood. Who in the hell can hear what he says? Please, i just don't get it. If they torture people with music in hell, i guess Euronymous and Dead are being tortured with their own stuff down there by now...

This leads me to believe that you know almost nothing about black metal.

I agree. I used to hate this album, but now I love it. Definitely an essential album for the early black metal scene.
