So I just gave this a first listen on a chilly morning walk and holy shit I was not prepared to have my mind blown and my heart torn out before work on a Tuesday.

sooooooooo good to see that new ppl are getting into this band. they really never got their due when they were around but maybe they can still build up some posthumous recognition.

Still the greatest indie rock band of the aughts in my book (very subjective take, I know).

It was kind of silly of me to put this off for so long because this is one of those albums that is just absurdly fit to my taste. Melodic, punchy, literate, emotional indie rock with aspects of country and folk, absolutely no fat or excess to it. I kept waiting for it to slip and it never did.

I can already tell this has a lot more to reveal but there's already so much I love! I don't want to be too hyperbolic but this may well have just skyrocketed straight to my top 100 ever if not top 50 in 2 listens. I took it for a walk again today and it may have just been the chill but there were a couple tears on my face by the time I hit "Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call".

Every time I listen to this, some new line I never really picked up on before slices right through me. Samson is amazing.

If this is an emotional wallop just wait until you hear Left And Leaving. I have to keep that one at arms length sometimes, it's just too much. This is a much easier listen while still moving the soul like no other.

Yeah this is for certain very emotional but it's also super listenable, with the exception of a couple tracks I could definitely imagine putting this on as background in a general crowd and doubt many would have issues with it.

The biggest surprise here for me was the country aspects, I mean there are at least 4 songs I'd comfortable label straight up alt-country and there are aspects of it in several other tracks.

Psalm is my early favorite but I basically love everything here.

I'm gonna bask in this for a while but will definitely get on Left and Leaving soon.
