In terms of songwriting I'd say Dylan is superior, so overall I'd say they're on par, if you get what I mean.

Cohen doesn't have nearly as many terrible albums as Dylan tho so Cohen gets the edge

I appreciate Cohen's talent for poetry but at the same time he doesn't do much for me since he uses it primarily if not almost exclusively to write love songs. Nothing wrong with a love song but I'd take Dylan's spiritual/philosophical "Desolation Row" or "Visions of Johanna" over Cohen any day.

And although it's true Dylan has a lot more poor albums than Cohen, he also has a lot more great ones.

That's kind of objectively wrong, it mean it depends on your definition of love song but Cohen's discography is hardly characterised by happy-go-lucky love songs in the slightest, if anything he melds philosophy, romance and poetry far better than Dylan who tends to just jump from one extreme to the other (also a great talent but it takes more skill to synthesise imo)

I agree they're not happy-go-lucky love songs but they're still essentially love songs. Don't get me wrong I know he puts some philosophy etc. in there ("Suzanne") but overall he seems somewhat "boring" in the content department. His style adds to this image, too, he's almost too smooth, even when he writes about something else he seems so concerned with being elegant and graceful he rarely ever truly provokes, truly amazes. Just a personal thing, though, as I said his skill is undeniable.

What about songs like Dress Rehearsal Rag, Tower of Song, Teachers, Stories from the Street, Bird on a Wire, Famous Blue Raincoat etc etc which aren't remotely love songs tho

See above. How is "Famous Blue Raincoat" not remotely a love song though?

Is your definition of love song just a song which has love as a topic? Because in tone and content Famous Blue Raincoat is essentially an anti-love song in every way, it's one of the grimmest songs ever written about a relationship so unless your definition is just songs which mention love at some point idk

ever written about a relationship

there you go

Ever heard The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs? I mention it because it consists of 69 love songs, but by your definition maybe 20 of them could be called such.

According to wikipedia, "a love song is a song about being in love, falling in love, heartbreak upon the ending of a loving relationship, and the feelings that these experiences bring." So yeah "Famous Blue Raincoat" definitely fits, as do a lot of other Cohen songs.

Right, this whole conversation makes a lot more sense now that I know that's your definition. For me personally a love song expressions affection/strong positive emotion specifically, and isn't just about relationships in general (isn't that most songs ever written?) but fair enough

Love has gotta be the most popular lyrics theme ever, I agree here.

Most songs are love songs tho, Dylan wrote hundreds of them. I don't see how theme is a valid way of judging an artist, isn't it all about the pure talent of an artist. Also, for me it is futile to say if Dylan or Cohen is the best, they are great in different ways. They are both masters of each their game.

I'm not judging him, as I said I acknowledge his craftmanship, it's just that it doesn't appeal to me. Surely there's nothing wrong with having a preference.
