I just rediscovered this album.. I love how it actually sounds like an album based on an ocean monster, instead of the lyrics being thrown onto the songs and hoping they stick. Iron Tusk is my fave, Naked Burn/I am Ahab are the worst, but they are still pretty good. Love that opemning guitar line on Hearts Alive :DThis Message Edited On 10.12.06This Message Edited On 10.12.06

Good album, but I bought Dragonforce's album Inhuman Rampage and that kills this record.
The only thing these albums have in common is that they're both technically awesome. Mastodon just doesn't wank nearly as much as Dragonforce...they actually have substance.
Some people say that Dailor overplays...I think he plays perfectly with the frenetic nature of the band.

nice review
The vocals took me a while to get into but now i love them, especially on the killer track seabeast, the end of that song is also really cool.
I think the drumming is pretty sweet too.

I liked the vocals more after I looked at the lyrics.

Good review, but how can you hate Naked Burn? It's one of my favorites from the album.

This album instrumentally is great but I just can't get into the vocals all that much... the drumming is just insane throughout.

Everyone always comment on how brilliant Dailor is - he truly is immense though.
But Troy is actually one heck of an underrated bassist - some of the fills he does for Megalodon are awesome. Looked brilliant live.
IMO their best album yet, followed very closely by Blood Mountain.

Everybody in Mastodon is quite talented (the vocals are less outstanding than just plain interesting and unusual) but the drummer is clearly the most skilled member. This review is pretty good but I would say that this is actually one of the most "genre" metal band there is; that is to say, this is one of the least pure metal bands I can imagine. There's way too much Southern rock/sludge/prog stuff in there.

I didn't realize the drummer and the guitarist are from Today Is The Day. ^_^;

This album is nothing short of amazing. Hearts Alive has to be one of the best metal/prog metal songs I've ever heard. Awesome guitar texturing, sick drumming, cool concept lyrics. Aqua Dementia has one of the sickest opening riffs to any album...kickass...

Aqua Dementia is brilliant live. That opening riff is like sex through speakers.
And yeah, Brann and Bill used to be in Today Is the Day. Completely different style but still killer.

Today Is The Day owns this.

Good review. Good album. Brann Dailor is one of the few drummers that can do so much without the use of a double-kick.

Out of all the Mastodon I've heard, this is the best, but even then it is incredibly average.
