doesnt really have anything to do with religion. some stuff can be seen as against an organized religion but it's got more to do with the concept of a goddess rather than some manifested god. like, flidais is the goddess of the forest. there's some stuff against conquests (religious or not) but i know the band isn't religious or anti-religion but that they find it really interesting. ill give you the quote the press release gave me because im too sick to explain this right now:

Fortress is conceptually a bit looser than Kezia, something the band did intentionally. "Some people got too nerdy, and would meet us at shows with printouts of the lyrics, and ask us to analyze segments of the concept. We'd like people to soak in the music without over analyzing," Walker, who started out playing trombone for moving to vocals, says about why the band chose to simplify things a bit, even though in PTH's world, everything is complex. The singer finishes, saying, "Fortress is not story-based at all. It's ideas that relate to one another through ancient tellings. It's history, present times, and a prediction of the future without getting too cheesy, but it's still cheesy." Essentially, PTH didn't want to get caught up in the concepts outliving the band; these guys would rather die in a fiery blaze. Mirabdolbaghi concurs, saying, "We were tiring of answering questions about Kezia, which was about a woman on death row for ambiguous reasons."

Mirabdolbaghi, who writes all of PTH's lyrics, sheds a little light on Fortress, which deals with the refeminization of deities, saying, "It has to do with Goddess Worship, and how there has been this degendering of the Lord and Savior, and the suppressed feminine." He continues, "A lot of it is based in Genghis Khan and old Irish Mythology, about the rise and fall of the Goddess of the forest. [The theme] can be more appreciated by more people. If I had to reduce it to its simplest form, the concept is about the re-emerging of goddess worship and the erosion of faith in scientific process."

So lyrics like the ones I posted in the review should give you a good point of reference. The idea of a goddess being raped, killed and regurgitated into a a god, yadayadayada.

Did Arif denounce his faith?

I dont think he denounced it so much as stopped actively practising it. He used to be a practising Muslim as far as I know. I just know he, like myself, like the rest of the band and like many others, has an active interest in it rather than being predominantly for or against the idea. But I'm putting words and ideas into his mouth so you'd really have to ask him. This Message Edited On 01.19.08

I'm a Christian but I hate organized religion in any form; it does way more harm than good.

I'm sort of against religious institution as well, but that's definitely irrelevant to this. This album deals more with the idea of a god or a goddess, not in a "higher power" sense but in a worshipped facet of nature, blablaba. I hope I'm making sense here.

It'd probably be worthwhile to look into the ideas that a lot of this is based on further, mostly Robert Graves' The White Goddess, as well as maybe some stuff regarding Flidais. It's pretty interesting stuff, if a little arbitrary sometimes. Has just as much to do with mythology and history as it does faith and religion.

An interesting line from the album that more or less completely describes my point of view is: "it's a neighbour saving face by saying grace today for yesterday's misfortune". But like I said, this album has more to do with mythology and more paganistic gods and goddesses than "jesus" or "god", yknow? This Message Edited On 01.19.08

From what I gather, yeah. Spoils basically talks about abstract ideas like the distinction between anima and animus, and sort of says how humans skew or misguide feelings or intentions. Its hard to go on without an actual lyrics sheet but I think you'll get a feel for the ideas with a full album.

Yeah, organized religion is lame, but people would war over something else if there were no religions. (See South Park's "Go God Go").

Yeah, I was thinking about it, but I would've felt like a bastard.

What I was hoping for was for Coke to respond right away to the comment.

That would've been HIlarious

But yeah, the comment section of this review shall be epic.

Really good review. I liked the one song that I heard off of Kezia, so I might get this when it comes out.

@ Cocaine:

How long did it take you to write this review?

Not too long, really. I wrote it over about a week but basically I spent three weeks beforehand thinking about what I wanted to say. Then I wrote a quick, messy review, then the next day in class I wrote a couple paragraphs, then I typed it all up that night. Then I fixed it all up a couple of days later, still have to tweak it a little. I spent a lot more time on this than I normally would but I'm still not satisfied. I had to write it and then try to trim out any bias, and I think I did an okay job at that but definitely could've done better.

Are you allowed to vote on a review for an album that hasn't come out yet? I mean, even though it hasn't, this review helped me imagine how this will sound. This Message Edited On 01.20.08
