These guy's like to change it up alot. They're heavily influenced by guns and roses and pantera and in most of they're songs thats reallllllllly obvious. But nonetheless they are one of the best rock bands in the world right now and they aint goin anywhere. I love this new album because none of the songs sound the same, and some of them have good meaning. Keep it up a7x.

this album was pretty much a disappointment. but i still love them.
the whole thing was lacking synyster gates. and "little piece of heaven" wasn't bad, but it wasn't avenged sevenfold. this album is good but not for them. i really hope they make up for this.

Metalcore is really dying...first Atreyu now this.

Well, I'm not gonna say much that hasn't been said.

Critical Acclaim = Trashed and Scattered minus the catchy riff and decent lyrics

Almost Easy = I feel this is the most original song on the album. I like that they experiment with changing time signatures and compound rhythms

Scream = catchy guitar licks, pretty basic Pantera-esque groove metal, I dig it, but not my favorite

Afterlife = ashamed that I like it. The verses are annoying with that damn moan. The chorus is catchy tho, and constantly gets stuck in my head

Gunslinger = M.I.A except worse...someone needs to tell M. Shadows that he's not a marine

Nothing else worth mentioning til
A Little Piece of Heaven = I like Nightmare Before Christmas, thank you very much. My stomach turned when I actually read the lyrics tho. I'm glad no one can understand M. SHadows....my girlfriend heard me playing this song >.

I dig A7X. Not my favorite band, but they have skill. I don't believe it's a band's job to come out with something thought provoking or awe-inspiring every time they go into the studio. I do feel this album is half-assed, but it's also a Halloween themed album from WB. What did you expect?

M. Shadows' lyrics are at an all time low, yes we get it. But the guitar work is still leagues above the competition at its lowest points. Syn Gates is a prodigy. If anyone wants to debate me on this, I can deliver a transcription of solos and point out theory wise why I believe this. His improvisation is comparable to Slash.

The more I explore this site, the more I feel like Splat is the only one who knows what he's talking about and the rest of you love to jump on his band wagon. The rest of you should take some music courses, grow some balls and get an opinion of your own. This Message Edited On 11.05.07

Every metal guitarist can shred, dude.

It's not about the shredding, and I already said this album was half-ass. The riffs are recycled, I agree. But his solos are amazing, so you can't discredit his skill, even if he isn't really showcasing it so well this time around. Like I said, I don't intend to defend this album, but I do think A7X have more skill than is being said here. The precision of The Rev, the improv range of Synister Gates, the harmony between Syn and Zacky V; these are all elements that make A7X a band that stands out.
Even if you hate the music, it makes you listen. You can compare certain aspects of A7X to other bands, but for better or worse they have a sound that is distinctly theirs. While this album is a farcry from WTF or STST, there is an undeniable sound that lets you know from the opening riffs that this is A7X.
Whether you hate or love them, you have to give credit when due. It's not easy to try and explore new ideas and genres of music, as well as move into the mainstream; and still retain a recognizable identity. While the music is changing, and maybe not for the better, A7X continues to stand out in the sea of mediocrity that is music today

Sorry, I'll try and make it more clear.

There are some decent songs on the album, but overall, I feel the album is weak. I agree on many of Splat's points on this album.

I disagree however, on many of his opinions of the band itself. But I respect his opinion. He doesn't simply say "they suck" like most of the common folk here. He has examples and clever comparisons to make his points.

So I do agree with Splat on some points, but overall I think his opinion is biased, generalized and unreliable.

I can't give them credit for this because it just sounds so lazy and contrived. If anything, City of Evil was the album where they moved into the mainstream while retaining their past sound. They did a very good job there, no doubt about that.

I'm a fan of a7x. My name shows that. But this album appalled me; I think fans should be optimistic of a band and follow it where it goes

But this ..."album" of "creativity" (weed?) crosses the line

But like Mike said, in response to the quote about "exploring new ideas and genres of music", I feel that circus metal should never be touched. Ever. Just... no.

It's like... they went to a carnival, and they saw a clown, and for some UNIMAGINABLE reason, they said 'HEY, LET'S ADD GUITARS TO THAT ON OUR ALBUM'

While Avenged Sevenfold isn't my absolute favorite band this album is better than a 1. I would give it a 3.5. The vocals are improved over CoE. Matt sounds a little more like he did on Waking the Fallen (where I thought he sounded really good). Granted alot of the lyrics are crappy (Scream, the stupid spoken parts in Critical Acclaim and A Little Piece of Heaven come to mind) but they aren't abysmal. And as always the musicianship is great. Production is better too (especially on The Rev's kick drum which sounded like crap in CoE). Overall it's not as bad as everyone is saying.

So, how many users does this make that become members of sputnik JUST to say how this album isn't as horrendous as it is?

Don't get me wrong. When I go to play A7X in my iPod, I won't be playing many tracks from this album. I really only responded because I wanted to defend the band itself.

Not even OJ's legal team could save this album from the critics. It deserves whatever people have to say about it.

Although I might try to sync up A Little Piece of Heaven to Corpse Bride and see what happens...

Hey Avenged Sevenfold fans,

I’m Laura and I work with the agency promoting Avenged Sevenfold’s newest release. If you're reading these reviews because you want to buy the CD, I recommend you pick up the MVI version because it has two discs. It has a DVD and the regular CD, a make-your-own-ringtones program, buddy icons, lyrics, and tons of videos. It has a bunch of videos, including a Making Of, and animated short, a Studio Tour and more. Don’t worry, you still get a regular CD so you can listen in your car!
Check out the website for more information http://mvimusic.com/avengedsevenfold/ or just post a question and I will check up.

Thanks,
Laura

So, it turns out that this album has sold 94,000 copies in its first week to land at #4 on the Billboard Charts.... amazing (not in a good way).
