I would say that it's melodic black metal. Black metal elitists just fear expansion for some reason so whenever any other influence aside from black metal shines through in the music, it's all of the sudden not tr00.
Yeah, the black metal elitist who is digging Blind Guardian and concedes to liking Dissection despite their not being black metal.

Retard.

Those who don't like black metal too much tend to love Enslaved for some reason.

Not true at all. I just don't fall for all of the hype and attention that Mayhem recieved during their earlier years. Enslaved has put out more consistent quality throughout the years and Mayhem has just been struggling. But, I can't argue with which band is better in the black metal genre (thats just difference of opinion), but I can argue as to who's career took off because of all the media attention (which is why I think alot of people think they are the best).

I dont like Mayhem more because of the media stuff. I like them more because they put out better stuff then Enslaved. Enslaved has 3 good albums IMO. Frost, Eld, and Ruun is decent. Mostly all of Mayhem's stuff is good except for maybe The Grand Declaration Of War.

Naa, I personally love Enslaved. Isa is tight, Below The Lights is spectacular and Ruun is pretty solid. Haven't heard the rest but a fanboy from what i've already heard. Still need Dom sathanas but my favorite album right now is Transylvanian Hunger. Does Darkthrone have any other spectacular albums?

Haha. Yeah it is. So.....this album kills anything Enslaved or Mayhem has ever done except for De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

There's really no need to throw around childish insults like that. I never called you a black metal elitist. I was trying to say that calling nothing but Darkthrone styled black metal actual black metal stems from all the elitist thought surrounding the genre thus confusing people. Look at it this way. There are lots of "blackened death metal bands" and nobody questions the genre, but the moment any black metal band has a hint of death metal everybody is all up in arms about how it's not really black metal. That's what I was saying. I apologize if it came across the wrong way.

I just see this album as melodic black metal with influences of straight up metal with the solos and some of the leads, but I really don't like overanalyzing it that way so I simply call it melodic black metal.

This is what gay, genre classifaction ALWAYS leads to. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Stupid poo poo is all it ever amounts to.

Anyways, I need to hear other stuff by these guys. Is The Somberlain any good?

Yes, it is just as good as this album. If you love this, you NEED to buy that album right now.

The Somberlain (song) is Dissection's best song but the rest of the album is nowhere near as good. This one is more consistent throughout.

Where Dead Angels Lie = Best song the genre has to offer IMO.

With Strength I Burn and Transylvanian Hunger are VERY CLOSE seconds.
