Metal Conservatives *Shrug*
To be fair, this band aren't even a metal band really, so its kinda understandable that metal purists just wouldn't like it.
A '1' rating is a little OTT mind.

Let me use some perspective.
A rating of 1 is what you give to a Hawthrone Heights album. Now can you really tell me, with all seriousness, that this album is bad enough to be placed along side a Hawthrone Heights album? Comon man, u know there is no way that is possible, pull yourself together and at very least raise this to a 1.5.

HIM albums are worthy of a 1 and you are digging those.
I really think this is a horrible, horrible album. I can raise it to a 1.5 or a 2, but that would only be to make it correspond with the review. I'd keep my personal rating of a 1.

No! Don't fold to the pressure! Fight for your rights to rate highly acclaimed albums badly!

It isn't a question of what we like. You can like whatever you want, there is no problem with that. The focus is on what we don't like. The worst I've ever done is give Pink Foyd's Dark Side of the Moon a 2, and give Godspeed YBE's Skinny Fists a 1.5 (really a 2 cuz the site doesn't allow me to give the 1.5) Both are suposebly this incredible masterpieces and although I don't like them there is a reason why they are classified as such and even though I didn't like them when I listen to them there were still some things that were decent or ok. I'm not doubting the validity of ur opinion (all jokes aside) I believe that what u wrote in review is what u feel, but I find it unbelievable than in an album as excellent as this one, you, a good metal fan, can't find stuff good enough to make this album worthy of more than a 1.
That is the actual thing that boggels my mind. This Message Edited On 09.26.07

I just think that the content of this review doesnt merit this as a 1. If you could somehow prove that the admittedly awesome parts of the album do no justice in redeeming the rest of the album, then I dont think there would be a problem with your review. Or just explain how this album completely lacks anything creative or catchy at all. An album that is stripped of anything enjoyable would deserve a 1, and I dont think this review fully explained that.

I could be a sissy and take the review down lol and rewrite. I think I'll just do that. It did kind of fail.

If you really want to, go ahead. I mean I personally think you backed up your points better in your Reign in Blood review.

Good review, though I completely disagree. Usually I agree with you wholeheartedly (even somewhat with the Reign in Blood review) but not this time. Sorry. :P

I don't care about the rating, I care about how you presented it, and most of your criticisms are cheap shots that seem to come from someone who was either hoping for the album to be horrible or someone who just doesn't like metal. Since you're obviously not the latter, I'll have to go with the former.

It wasn't the former either.

The fact one indulges in technicality and complexity doesn't excuse that person from immunity to write a good, coherent song.
Says the guy that rated a 5 for Images and Words from Dream Theater...
This album isn't worth the 4.1 it gets, but a 1 is indeed quite low. Plus, very few points and arguments were backed up good, so I have to neg it.

That album is great and coherent. In my opinion, at least.
|

Still, your main argument of this album is the overdose of technique while Dream Theater is considered one of the most wankery, technical and complex metal bands on earth. It doesn't really make sense.
Yeah, because Insomnium, Arch Enemy, and Behemoth use a ton of Mr. Bungle parts, bar room skits, and all of the circus-like antics BTBAM employs.
Your comparison is flawless.
You included Insomnium in a comment of yours! I love you.

I have heard better albums and worse albums. For me, the good parts don't quite outweigh the bad parts and vice versa. Tbh nothing really makes me want to gouge my ears out which for me is when an album truly deserves a 1.

Well, I'm sort of torn on this one. I just bought it and enjoy for what it is, but damn, these guys CANNOT write a song. Like you said, it's a mindless string of riffs and melodies with no coherence. This is so incredibly true. It sort of reminds me of Opeth... but on crack.
I like it for what it is because a lot it is really cool actually, but if these guys get their shit together and actually learn how to write a song, they could be AMAZING.
I haven't listened to it enough for a rating but it will probably be 3.

I enjoy noodling, and I love most of Opeth's stuff, but this review does point what I've always struggled with concerning this band: they're show-offs and not artists.
It's very impressive that they can genre-jump ala' Mr. Bungle, but Bungle had a sense of irreverence about their music that BTBAM don't have. Everything is presented in a serious manner, and jumping genres the way they do, without sounding a little goofy is impossible.
Plus I'm still mad at them after that covers album. What a ridiculous, pretentious, and pointless waste of $15 that was. - That's great you can do a convincing cover of Queen, Smashing Pumpkins, and Metallica and put it on the same album, but again: it doesn't mean you should. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" - they should write that down and hang it in their studio. This Message Edited On 09.26.07

Why didn't you talk about problems with the songs on the album? I thought this album is BTBAM's best to date.
