A lot of old reviews mention rolling stone's rankings

The Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums list is actually a pretty well made piece and adds to the accolades the album has received since it's release. To call it "completely bogus" you're clearly missing the point.

my understanding is that the point of it is to list the top 500 albums of all time, and i happen to disagree with most of it. I mean yeah it's probably a good collection of quite a number of the greatest albums, but it's still not much to go by in terms of an actual ranking of albums

I hear you - I can't say I agree with a lot of it either, but if you take into account everything that makes up a great album (for example: quality, influence, time period, popularity, etc etc - not just to you, but to a large audience of people/critics and what not) I'd say they took a decent stab at trying to piece together 500 of the best albums. Of course there probably is no one who agrees with all of it (or even most of it), but for a mainstream magazine I'd say they covered a lot of ground. As I said, calling it "completely bogus" just seemed a bit far.

There are TONS of albums I would've loved to see on that list over others or higher on the list - just somewhat of a reference point of sorts I suppose you could say.

@theboss
yeah man, i just get angry easily about this kind of thing. i don't think it's completely bogus but words like that creep into my vocabulary when it comes to music. i pretty much agree with you in any case

Big Black Mariah, Singapore, Jockey full of Bourbon, Time... just more proofs of the entire ingeniousness of Tom Waits. He's a real poet, meaning that by using his art, he succeeds in substituting to the common reality, his own.
